Are you ever an "oh what the hell?" buyer?

topstuftopstuf Posts: 14,803 ✭✭✭✭✭
You want it. It's available. You want to pay X. It's "X + Y". You look at "Y". You still want the coin. So you say "oh what the hell?" and buy it.

Yes, I did that with an NGC (star) graded coin just to have an example of a (star) graded coin.

What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?

No. If I have a price in mind I never pay price +.

However, I have bought coins that I did not have in mind but there was something special about them that price was not an issue.

The only time I give into the "oh what the hell" mentality seems to be when I have the coin in hand. If I go to a shop or show, I seem to be much more prone to impulsivity- online, I have more patience and discipline.....

Yes - this was my latest one. The obverse is pretty dinged up, but the reverse is nice so, what the hell, why not?

Yes. Several weeks ago at Long Beach, I finally found a Braided Hair 1/2 Cent in MS 65 RB that was in the ballpark of what I was willing to pay. The seller wanted $150 more than I thought I should spend. He dropped the price by $50, so I spent an extra $100.

I did this because I've been looking for a 1/2 Cent like this one for 3 years and didn't know when I'd find another one. OTOH, if I had just started looking for one of them, I probably would have passed on the coin.

Coin was a ungraded 1899P Morgan. Might of overpaid a little but ive been looking up and down for this one and it was one of the nicest I have seen. When I get a picture I'll post it and would like some feedback on it.....Would be greatly appreciated.

both cost more than they were "worth" at the time, but still crazy about em, and I still have not seen their equal for less than twice what they cost.

90% of my collection is a "oh what the hell" coin. It's probably why my wife yells at me and I'm broke all the time image
