Home U.S. Coin Forum

possible silly newbie question-

One of my coworkers (knowing I was vaguely into coins) was relating a story about something called a "Liberty" dollar- which apparently is NOT a US Mint coin, but is supposedly still a 'valid tender' coin?

Apparently, someone else (don't know who) has minted and is 'backing' this coin with their gold-
It's popular amongst what I'd call the 'earthie' fruit-nut types here

what is this thing they're talking about? some sort of urban legend, or a real 'scam' of some sort?

- I've not heard of this before...image

    Liberia (sp) coins maybe.
  • I've seen Liberty dollars on ebay. From what I gather they are supposed to be legal tender, but not made by the Gov.I'm pretty sure they're all paper, rather than coinage.

Get on ebay and do a search. One is liable to come up.
  • He is talking about this

So you could actually spend them, for whatever value they say?

  • It is a private currency. These folks wish the US never went off the gold standard. So they created their own currency.

It reminds me of the barter movement that was big a while back. Once you find Liberty dollars to buy you need to find merchants that will accept them.

From what I gather off ebay, yes. But as Carl stated, you have to find smoeone to accept them.

That may prove to be difficult.

    I thought you meant these.
  • Thanks Cam - that does sound like _exactly_ what I was being told about- beautiful pictures!

That was pretty much what I'd told them- you can print any money you want- just can't make people take it, and you'd better not claim it's real US Mint
stuff either- fraudulent currency is just as much a problem as it is with actual counterfeit, as I understand it...

On July 11, 1967 the country of Anguilla declared their independence. They produced a series of counterstamped coins commemorating the event. The counterstamp has the date of independence in the center, Anguilla above and the phrase "Liberty dollar" at the bottom. this was counterstruck on Mexican 1, 5 & 10 peso, Peru one sol, Yemen Riyal, Panama Balboa, Ecuador 5 sucres, china Yuan Shih Kai dollar, and British Trade dollar. Although they had legal tender status they did not circulate.

But I agree, Cameron probably has the Liberty Dollar your co-worker is talking about.

Anyone want to start a militia and use this as their currency?

I think I rather just buy the gold and silver myself instead of "hoping" someone I dont know is holding it for me. Plus I bet I can buy it at better prices elsewhere.

OT: The website would have to list a newspaper and a bunch of people from here in Austin, all the crazies are moving here I think. image
  • I'm with Russ, the word pyramid comes to mind.
