Capital Plastics holder causing toning?

Just picked up a nice short set of Mercury dimes in a white Capital Plastics holder (#436A). Several of the coins have nice rainbows starting.....any chance the holder is doing it, or were they more likely transferred from an old album? Pic attached.

I have a type set in a capital holder thats been hanging on my wall for 30 years. I fully expected the coins to tone, but to this date nothing.

    Mike,

It's not the plastic that's causing the toning, but most likely the tissue paper in the box that your Capital Plastics holder is in that is causing it (see picture).

To the extent that air can get to the coins, some toning can take place in Capital Plastic holders.

BUT a more likely source is the tissue paper, or if the coins were dipped residues from the solution will cause the coins to darken fairly quickly.

  • In my experience, coins can definitely tone in Capital holders.

My Mercury dime set stayed in a Capital holder for about 10 years, and the top row of coins (closest to the edge where the air gets in) started toning. Just the tops of the coins were turning color, so obviously it was from the air getting in. Some of the toning was attractive gold, but some was spotty and unattractive.

    Ditto. Here's an example:

All the coins in the holder were toned. The holder was also 1960's vintage, so they'd been in there a long time.

When I used to use Capital holders, I would run Scotch MAGIC (not regular sticky) tape around the edges and overlap it and then trim with an angled razor blade.

You can quite often see the space between the layers of the plastic. I think it is here, rather than the screws where the air gets in.

Also it is worse in 4 screw proof set models than 6 screw but the plastic still "buckles" to an extent.

That tape seems to seal it. I have a 1940 proof set (4 screw) that has stayed bright for 30 years.

Just opened it last night to take out the cent. I swabbed the cent with "Care" 30 years ago and it had evaporated and left blotchiness. After a naphtha bath, it was as nice as new. Looks like Care worked.

Have had the set since 1955 when it was my 15th birthday present.

Now have to find a more air tight accomodation. Or retape the holder.

    hey Jeff

you seem to be wanting to know if the holder itself is causing the toning. i would say no, the material used in the holder is inert and won't harm coins inside it. it is almost certainly just the general atmosphere or something the holder is coming in contact with as others have suggested.

I agree. The toning is not being caused by the holder. Had the toning been there when you got the set or has it developed since? If it's developed after you got the coins I'd say it most likely is the tissue paper.

As mentioned, the Capitol holders aren't even close to airtight. Especially the larger ones. I have a set of Roosevelts (nicely toned) in a large Capitol holder. The plastic is so loose the coins rattle when you flip the holder over, obviously they are sliding and hitting the opposite plastic piece. I fully intend to slab the whole set, problem is I don't know when I'll get around to it!
