Toned State Quarters???

Hey folks, I don't post much (ok this makes twice) but I've came across something I couldn't find by searching or elsewhere. I'm finding, circulated, somewhat toned state quarters in my change. Two last week - should they be tone / tarnishing so soon? Last week's were both yellow-ish on the obverse. Found one that had a bit of light green to it. I tried taking pics to no avail. I can't imagine someone would do anything artificle to a coin and recirc it. Any ideas???? I'm working under the assumption I'm not sitting on anything special, just suprised to come by them.

Cheers!image

Coins in circulation can sometimes tone very quickly. They get exposed to a very wide variety of environments and contaminants.

I collect state quarter from circulation and store them in a alubm. Most of the 99's and 00's have already started to turn a light golden color.

......funny thing that this is the only one in book that has toned (since only 2002) - I had them with the design side OUT. Hadn't opened book in awhile and ZOWWIE - this one just stood up and said HELLO! The bottom and sides blue and lavendar and the top is very golden. (book made in China - can't find mfg. name.) Well the others are toning gold around edges, but this is the only one with purple and blue.

I've had a few toned when I opened up the 1999-2000 mixed quarters bag I bought from the mint last year.
So, that means that sometime in the last couple of years sitting in the Mint's places, and then 1 year at my house, it started to tone a few of them.
Not all of them, but some of them.

So, yes.....they can be toned and be circulated (even though these are UNC, I have been temtped to put a few out there).

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Found these state quarters in the bag straight from the mint. Though these are probably from a rinse problem.

I kinda like this one, it's the only state quarter I ever bought. A golden toned Connecticut with a untoned trunk on the oak tree. I noticed it in a tray of uncirculated state quarters on a dealers table at a coin show as I was walking by and bought it for 50 cents just for the novelty. It was the only toned quarter visible on a whole tray display of many quarters of all the states that have been minted.
