Time to play "you see this coin offered in a public auction and want to buy it - what will you

A pretty toned 1916 Buffalo nickel graded MS66 by PCGS.... CCDN ("Bluesheet") shows a price of $585.

What would you bid? What do you think the final hammer price will be?

Hmmm - that reminds me.... roadrunner owes me a big lunch at Pittsburgh off that Koshkarian half dime you did before. image

Darktone/Mike, could you be a wee bit more specific in your estimate?image

TDN - no charge for that beneficial reminder. Maybe you two could go double or nothing on this one?

It's a very pretty coin. I'd gladly bid $1000 of your money for it image

My thinking is that the half dime and this nickel are two completely different animals. The half dime was so pretty that the grade was almost irrelevant, not so with the nickel. Also, the half dime was low MS and people are always willing to stretch grades in that range for special eye appeal. Not so for a coin that is more of a commodity.

So.... I'd guess hammer of only $850-900 on this one.

All kidding aside- not really knowing Buffalo's I would not be afraid to bid 2X and if I felt it was really a proof in person I would bid it as a proof. mike image

$50.00 is my limit on a coin unless it's REALLY special or for a good cause

    I'll say $875. Toning's worth a couple hundred extra.

It's just another 1916. Under bid.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • I'll bet it will go for around $900 to $1000 minus the buyer's premium.

I'll also bet that I'm underestimating. It seems like I've been underestimating a lot on coins in this market.
    It's kind of insane.

Have you seen the 1915 PCGS MS64 that is already at $585 in the same auction? That's about 5X list and floor bidding hasn't even started on the coin yet.

Considering that MS67 is a 10x increase at PCGS at 6x at NGC, this coin has stretchability, even in the registry. I'd be willing to say
3x blue sheet would be reasonable...say $1600-1800. If it has any shot at an NGC 67 or a 66*, it would be worth $2000 imo.

It depends on the auction. The stuff that went off this morning seemed like the prices were low to me. My guess at the final hammer 1350.00 plus juice.

I personally would not bid as I am not a type set buyer. And for a set of Buffalo's Id prefer a coin closer to the original nickel color.
But its a very pretty coin with great color, and for someone who likes this type of coin, I can see it easily fetching 2300.00+ in todays market.

The auction is over. Price realized: $950 [plus the juice]
  • The way prices were in the Pre-Long Beach Auction yesterday, I am gonna say it will bring $1300+

TDN - thanks for reporting the price realized and congratulations on an excellent estimate, even if you weren't perfect like Relayer was. image

BUT, I did not see (or hear) you or Roadrunner take me up on my suggestion of going double or nothing. So, according to my records, you are due only one meal from him.image
  • roadrunnerroadrunner Posts: 28,313 ✭✭✭✭✭
I learned my lesson on the first auction not to bet against TDN. I'm counting on higher inflation to help minimize the cost of that meal!
And that was not a CPI adjusted mealimage

TDN, please predict the final tally on my quarter. This will really prove your soothsayer skills.
