My Toned Peace $ Collection Part I 1921-1923 (lots of big pics)

I've started photographing my toned Peace $ so I can finally post the pics for Registry purposes.

Here's the first 5 coins. Actually I'm quite pleased with these pics. These are quite good representations of what the coins actually look like. My only complaint is the glare off the slabs. If anyone can help me clean them up a bit and make them nicer -- I'll throw ya a toned Canadian Proof Set.

    Let's see some more!
  • This stuff works great. You can pick it up at the Container Store or local stores. Or get that Scratchaway stuff from one of the peeps on the boards.

Nice pics Mike. I especially like numero uno pic...The dollar too. What does it grade?
What is money, in reality, but dirty pieces of paper and metal upon which privilege is stamped?

I took out the slab, combined obverse and reverse, and resized them to registry size, so that they're all under 100K. Is this better?

Sorry they're not all quite the same length, but since they display each picture in the registry individually, it shouldn't matter too much. Hope this helps! Also, those are some very nice Peace dollars! Would you mind sharing the grades with us?

Not much I could do about the glare. But I think they will work.

Don't use the Ott lights and the blue-ish tint will go away. I think someone was showing how to use a piece of glass angled over the slab to help cut down on the glare in another thread- if I can remember the name of the thread I will post it in a link for you. mike image

Everytime I post a pic, Cosmic makes it nicer -- thanks!

Gunfunko, thanks but I prefer Cosmic's white background. Nice job though. Better than I could have done!

Mike -- I don't use OTT lights, these were taken using reveal bulbs and I did use the angle glass technique. Unfortunately, it brought out the color, but I had to angle the glass so that the light really hit the coin well. Doing this caused the glare. Its a trade off -- less color, darker pic or a more colorful brighter pic with glare. I just don't know how to get rid of the glare using the editor.

These are the first 5. I've got 17 more to go. As I take additional pics, I'll post them here.

It's nice to be able to share these finally.

    Thanks again,
    Michael

    Hi Michael,

I use natural light late in the day from a north facing window to cut down on the glare coming off the slab.
Last night for instance, I shot a few images at 6:30 PM and they turned out pretty good. Give it a try.

I have been been using a regular clear 100 watt bulb and tilting the glass a different angles as well as moving the light around to get the best shot.

Michael, I've teased you about your "ugly toned Peace dollars"image for a LONG time. But, after seeing your great pics, I thought perhaps I'd say something nice about themimage.......... then again, the thought of doing that is extremely painful.....

    maybe another time..... image

...like now........ I might delete this part of my post at a future date, but, your (very pretty, not ugly) toned Peace dollars really do look good!image

That's a Binion MS65* -- I think it's the highest graded toned 1922 Binion and quite possible the highest for all Binions. If anyone has a nicely toned Binion graded higher I would love to see a pic of it. Theres a MS64 that I've seen, and its a beautiful coin as well.

Thanks for all the compliments and a special thank you to Cosmic for helping me out with this!!!!

I can't play in your end of the pool yet. I wish I could afford some of the coins that you post. Someday, I just got to work my way up that hill.

The MS66 and MS67s are too far out of my price range. So I do what I can. Its the only set @ NGC with two * Peace $. I guess that's a minor accomplishment. And, like I said I'm pretty sure I got the highest graded toned Binion. And I think I have the only NGC graded rainbow toned Redfield Peace $.

To everyone -- Thanks, again, for all the compliments.

More pics are on the way.

    Michael

Man, I wasn't talking about prices and grades and * coins. Besides * coins are NOT grades anyway. But I do notice these days folks want to count them in the pops as hype. Frattlaw, I was only kidding and meant the "Big boy's or girl's" as in color. Touch touchy.

Edit to add.... the coins you posted are very nice and I meant no harm with my previous post. Enjoy your set.

    beautiful coins, nice pics image

next time you photograph them, try covering the slab above the coin with something non-reflective, such as a piece of neutral or dark colored cloth. not enough to obscure the coin, but place the curved edge of the cloth near the edge of the coin to minimize the glare from the part of the plastic that you're going to crop out of the picture anyway. Then move your lights and camera around to get your best representation (as you obviously did to get these)

or, crack the coins out; they're hella easy to photograph raw image

Sometimes I'm tempted to do that. image

You know, I originally thought this myself but trying to photograph a raw coin is a pain in the ass. When I take pictures I need to angle the coin to get just the right colors into the lense. My set up is such that I have to angle the coin (I can't angle the camera) so trying to do this with a raw coin is difficult and possibly harmful to the coin. Especially a smaller coins such as a dime or nickel. It's easier to angle with a slab. But, then again, much of the problem is getting rid of that damn glare from the slab itself. ARGH!

Then there are the headaches coming from trying to photo NGC slabbed coins which screws up the iris. ACK!

to photograph raw coins, carefully place them in the rubber insert from an NGC slab, (without the clear plastic covering) and then tilt that as needed, to show the colors, with no plastic glare image

edited to add: not really serious, Michael, as I guess this is a registry set and would need to stay slabbed.

I'm sure that could work but the problem then is the WHITE slab. I have real difficulties with the white NGC slab, it screws up the aperature on the lense...I do, however, need to learn more about the "manual" mode on my camera. Bascially, I need a better set-up....

Baley has the trick - just don't use the white insert from NGC - crack a PCGS slab and use the opaque/clear insert from that slab. Tried it this weekend with some copper coins and I am getting much better pics where the coin stands out great!!
