POLL: Coin photography contest survey...

coinlieutenantcoinlieutenant Posts: 9,320 ✭✭✭✭✭
This was posted on another thread but I figured that this might help out a bit more.

This poll is to indicate interest and how/if you would participate.

2004 1st Annual PCGS Coin Forum Photo Contest

Each contestant would enter one photo for the competetion.
Each member gets to vote on the winner after a pre determined amount of time.
Any and all board members allowed to enter (even darksiders) image
On the honor system, members that submit a coin for competition cannot vote for their own photo. If voting, you must vote for another persons coin.

Rules:
Photo can be a single coin, a collage of coins, pretty much anything with coins in them.
Voters determining the winner should remember to place emphasis on the quality of the picture itself, not the quality of the coin.

A winning picture would have represent the coin/coins in question accurately, make good use of lighting, be artistically and tastefully presented and be original in thought.
Pictures can be of any size but not larger that 1000 by 1000 pixels.
Pictures will be in .jpg format and compressed for web viewing.
Pictures must be taken by the contestant in the competition, no pirating of pictures.
All photos must be submitted in proper format to me via PM with proper linking by June 7th.
If you do not have web hosting, email me your picture (jmmarbur@nps.navy.mil) and I will host it for you.
Photos in competition will be posted by me in random order on the 8th and voting will begin immediately and remain open until the 15th of June
You do not have to own the coin that is photographed, you just have to take the picture of it.
Competetion photos will be presented ananomously as to remove bias from the competition.

More/less rules will be added as seen fit. PM me with suggestions.

Edited to add:
There will be prizes for 1st-3rd place...image Dont know what kind of prizes but there will be!!!

IMO, the only way to have such a competition is to have the coins available for viewing in person, and then look at the pic. Otherwise there's no way to know how accurate a picture is, and whether it's been doctored (the pic, not the coin). I believe it would come down to a pretty toning contest, otherwise.

Ideally, everyone should have the same coin(s) to image.

Wow, I don't know how I missed that thread. Depending on when it is, I'll find a way to post one. image

Another suggestion to give a level playing field,is to have everyone who choses to participate, using the same subject matter.Perhaps ordinary circulating coinage such as a lincoln cent, washington quarter, and a Jefferson nickel pulled from circulation. This would keep the quality of photos at the forefront, and perhaps keep those who are voting from being swayed by more exotic issues or extraordinary color coins that might not be within the means of some participants in the contest.Just a thought.image

The hard part is to get the pictures judged as pictures and not as popularity contest for the most beautiful coin. If someone takes a stunningly accurate picture of a 1972 nickel in VG condition it should be judged the same as a 1794 dollar.

Understand that it cannot be perfect but we are all smart people here. Most of us can tell a doctored photo from one that is not.

As far as a toner winning, it very well might, but any photo contest always has a lot to do with the subject being photographed.

If something simple and unassuming is taken, it must be compensated for by transcending the moment and bringing an emotion out in the viewer...

I agree Why don't we all use the same shiney new state quarter and shiney new penny? If it's done like this I'll even enterimage. mike

Oh, a 3000 X 3000 image is almost unusable. Should limit it to a size that fits on most people's screens without scrolling, like 600 or 700 square.

      Good idea...

I will make it a bit smaller...

    • I'd give it a go by offering up a photo. Since I can't vote on my own coin can I vote on another? Since so many want to submit a photo should all those people vote on the coin they like best not including their own?

image Can't vote for my own image even if I think it is the best one??????

I say 800 X 400 would be a good image size for a OBV and REV shot of a coin.
