If You Could Go Back in Time to Any Era to get any coin/coins, What would they be?

Would you go back for the soul purpose of getting bags of Rare coins to sell for mucho buckos today?

Would you go back for a single piece and cherish it, never to sell?

I'd say 1790 - 1860, assuing I'd live that long.

I'd put away a couple chain cents, wreath cents, disme, half disme and an assortment of gold in the 1790s and early 1800s ( 1822 half eagle - ca-ching).

Of course I'd be dead now and not able to enjoy any of that stuff, but ... oh to dream.

I would go back and hand pick fresh business strikes and all proofs and PORs of all Victorian coinage from 1838 to 1901 directly from the mint. Of course, I would accept only MS/PF 67/69 material. Also, throw in a few dozen each of the Jubilee proof sets and the Old head sets too. Maybe a few dozen Una's. Cosmic wants one!

Oh yeah, just one each of everything the US struck from 1792 to 1838: MS66 or better, of course. The other stuff is just too modern!!

I'd go back to that day in 1964 when the mint handed out newly minted Peace dollars to its workers. Then, I would follow one of them to the bar, tuck a few benjamims in his pocket and walk away with a the dollar.

Though maybe not my first pick, you'd have to admit that San Francisco in 1909 would be a good place to pick up some bags of cents, be they Indians or VDB Lincolns...

Now, here's the twist to this often-asked question. You have a one-time round trip ticket to anywhere in time (I guess I should say "anywhen" in time). You are going back to get coins. BUT- here is the twist- in order to trade with the folks back in your chosen time, you must bring something that would not cause a time paradox (in other words, no modern money- look at what happened to Christopher Reeve in Somewhere In Time- he accidentally pulled a 1979 Lincoln cent out of his pocket, back in 1912, and got sucked into the time vortex!)

Would you bring worn-out, crappy Indian cents with you to San Francisco to purchase new 1909-S Indians or S-VDB Lincolns, for example? What would be your best exchange possible? (In other words, what period coinage or currency would cost you the least amount of money now, in order for you to exchange it back then?) And you couldn't take low grade 1909 plain Lincolns to San Fran to swap for new S-VDB's. Remember, you'll be in 1909, and they wouldn't have had time to get all worn out.

1915 to pick up some of those Panama Pacific sets that include the $50 Round and Octagonal. Would also be interesting to get to see the Panama Pacific Exhibition in San Francisco. Then I'd have to take a train to Nevada where I'd visit the largest log cabin in the state which had been built there by my great grandfather and meet for the first time my grandfather and great grandfather. My dad would be there too as a child. (The log cabin still exists as it was transported to Elko, Nevada where it was restored and now houses Elko's Chamber of Commerce.)

For some of the collectors here who are more advanced in age, my answer may not seem all that exciting. I would very much like to go back to the 1950s/60s and pay face value for bags of Morgans...what fun! And they would cost you face value...but think of the fun you would have going through them. Alas, that is a feeling that I think no collector will ever enjoy again.

well if I really had a time machine, I would start "at the beginning" and stop in just long enough to pick up a bag of each coin from each era. Then I would stop for a period of time in 1899, 1926, and then an extended stay in late fifties-early sixties. Who knows I may just never come back.

No problem, bullion. Melt it down, mix in a few impurities and cast it into rough bars. Sillver will work for any time period, gold for most. Don't use gold for the US between 1934 and 1974 unless you don't mind the government poking around asking you questions. During the right time periods you can just take the bullion straight to the mint and deposit it and they will strike you whatever coins you want from it.

My name would then be pedigreed after my death. Then I'll buy the Yankees and will be extra careful not to change so much as a single thing.
