Sorry for the delay guys and gals. I am trying to get in the car for CSNS and am busy this morning. The way I am scoring this contest is to add the difference of each member's guess. For example if you were 3 points off (either way) on Coin #1 and 5 points off on Coin #2, then your total score is 8. That's the best way I could think of doing this. Here are the grades:

    Coin #1: PCGS MS-61 BN
    Coin #2: PCGS MS-62 BN

This was truly a wild guessing game, since Coin #1, imho, is a much nicer coin than Coin #2, which actually has active corrosion in one of the reverse planchet flaws (see the green stuff?). Coin #1 also has a much nicer strike and is very lustrous, whereas Coin #2 is flat and dull and is actually slightly granular. In short, playing this "guess the grade" game was like playing the lottery.

Congratulations to Braddick, who guessed MS-62 and MS-63, for a total low score of only 2 points. Braddick wins the MS-63 certified Morgan Dollar. Braddick, we are out of PCGS, NGC and ANACS 63's, so you will receive a lovely ACG MS-63 Morgan. (just kidding image)

2nd place goes to our new forum member Artist, who guessed MS-64 and MS-62, for a total score of 3 points. Artist will receive a raw, circulated (but very nice) Morgan Dollar.

I will post images of the prizes when I return from CSNS.

Honorable mentions go to Boz, who only missed by 4 points.

At least 4 members (maybe more, but I don't have time to check) guessed the exact grade on Coin #1. Those 4 are: Oreville (61, 53), MassFullStep (61, 40), JimC (61, 45) and JrGman2000 (61, 30). Notice how all 4 who guessed the grade of Coin #1 also graded Coin #2 at VF-30 to AU-53. Having seen both coins, I would have guessed MS-63 for Coin #1 and AU-50 for Coin #2, which means that I would have lost the contest by a long shot.

PS - Neither coin is for sale by us. This was just a contest for fun only. Thanks for playing!

By a true, raw unc. from one of the C4 boyz.

Congrats to the winners. image Nice guessing. image

I wouldn't buy Coin B even with Feldini's money......that chasm with the green grunge is a problem; plus the other rev. streaks look akin to haymarking.....somd kine of planchet impurity thing going on, eh?

    Cheers.
  • Ok ........... so it sounds to me like the general concensus is that they are over-graded. image

So who came the closest to the "actual" grade. (don't flame me, i wasn't the only one who felt they were graded a lot lower) image
  • JadeRareCoinJadeRareCoin Posts: 2,768

So who came the closest to the "actual" grade.

Doug, very good question. I called them MS-63 and AU-50, respectively. So, whomever came closest to those numbers will also receive a circulated Morgan Dollar (same as 2nd place prize). If you think you were closest, post your grades here. I won't have time to go back through this thread to check.

Marc, they are slabbed exactly as we stated. I will have to obtain images of both coins (they are not mine) in the slab and then post them here.

  • Thank you, Jaderarecoin, for doing this. I think I speak for everyone here when I say we all had a lot of fun with this. image

    << I called them MS-63 and AU-50, respectively. >>

I was fairly close to your guesses. I called them MS63BN and AU58. I think the first one was not too far off from RB, and looked better than MS61BN. The second one appeared to have a bit of wear and corrosion, thus I guessed AU58. Oh well, I'm NOT a copper expert. You copper folks sure have it tough compared to us silver folks.

Coin A is very lustrous? It looks dull as heck in the picture and the color is so light it looks like it was messed with.

    1921 Morgan in Unc.

Very kind, thank you! (PM sent) Now... if you had me estimating the grade on that slabbed "MS63" Morgan, I'd have lost (sure looks better to me).
