Should I return this coin?

BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
This is one of the other coins, an 1886-S dime, I received yesterday from a mail-order list purchase (with full no-question return policy), along with the 1797 dime I posted yesterday. I'm probably going to return it because of the ding in the scroll. Do you think I'm being too picky for a circulated coin?

What was the stated grade for the coin?

VF, and I paid strong VF money for it.

In a word, Barry - yes. BUT, that is your right and you should buy what YOU like.image

If the ding bothers you now it will still bother you in 2 years - 3 years if there is a no questions asked policy I would send it back. You pay good money and not happy with it...you know what to do.

    Barry,

If the coin does not do it for you when you first see it, then it never will. If I were in your place, I would return it.

It wouldn't bother me personally...but then, I'm not you. If every time you look at that coin, you focus on that dinger, then it's gonna drive you crazy. I'd say send it back and live to fight another day

If you don't like a coin the first time you see it send it back. Coins with problems don't age well.

i'd be more concerned about the scratch starting above her left shoulder going down to her crotch.

    still vf-20 overall, though.

If you don't like it go ahead and return, but it's the kind of return that can get dealers unhappy with you.

We are talking VF-20 here. Even if it were graded VF-30 would not be outragiously off. What do you expect for a VF-20? If it's an EF-40, then maybe you need to review what your standards are and what you really want.

I consider myself very picky but that's even too picky for me! I think it's nice & it might become a cool toner if you leave
it out of the 2x2 for awhile. Looks like some nice color already started. That's just my 2 cents (hey, you asked!). image

Personally, I like the coin, and I think the marks are minute and appropriate for the grade. But like everyone else has stated, if you don't like the mark now, you will probably like it even less as time goes by. However, mark free surfaces might cost you more than you want to spend right now. image

I have to agree with those who say that if a coin doesn't grab you immediately, send it back. It won't get any better from here on.

Thanks for the opinions gang. I'll have to take another look at the coin when I get home tonite.

I completed my Seated Dime series about a year ago, the vast majority of coins VF/XF. A few months ago, I opened up the Dansco album and found a handful of coins I decided to replace, for one reason or another. Maybe that's why I'm being picky. I already have this date in VF, and am looking for a nicer VF (or XF).

As far as pissing off the dealer, I don't know what to say. That's the risk, for both the buyer and seller, of dealing off a mail-order list. This particular dealer stills mails lists - no web site with pics. Joining the high-tech world would obviate some returns, I suspect. Also, I did spend $2K+ on this order, and this coin is ~5 percent of that total (the others are keepers).

    Keep the comments coming!

If you want to keep the relationship with the dealer, offer to compensate them for the cost of shipping you the coin. And you might consider looking for XF's instead of VF's to upgrade the one you already have. Looking for super choice VF's off a mailing list is likely a waste of time - they are being sold as XF's.
