Cards that never were

Another thread on this forum mentioned a 1971 PSA 9 Schmidt. Of course, it didn't exist, but I can imagine how HUGE that card would be if it did exist.

It reminds me of the 1953 Topps reprint set that put an Aaron card in it (Aaron's rookie of course wasn't until 1954).

What other cards that never were would've made a great hobby collectible?

The obvious one is a 1967 Seaver/Ryan rookie. Someone even made up a fake one in the early 90's I remember seeing.

I think a 1975 combination card of Aaron and Al Downing, maybe with Hank slipping Al a "Franklin" for grooving that pitch for him for #714.

Others????

  • I have actually put thought to this question...

    - a 1971 Topps Schmidt would be highest on my list...

I would have also loved to see a

    I'd like a 1966 Steve Carlton, a T-206 Joe Jackson, and a 1993 Topps Finest Derek Jeter.
I'd like a 1951 Bowman Joe DiMaggio, a 1934 Goudey Babe Ruth, and a 2001 Bowman Chrome Mark Prior Autograph.

Do you mean 1972, toppsgun? Mike did not play in the majors in 1971 (or even in the minors), he was drafted in 1971. As for 1972 -- he does have a card (actually a sticker), it is just a Winter Leagues card, not a major league one.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.
  • a 1972 schmidt would be cool too... especially a high numbered one...
but as a fan of the 1971 would be a dream for me... a horizontal card of him diving for a ball with one of those little rookie trophies in the corner...
eventhough he wasn't in the majors... it's just a year or two late... and a dream card anyways...
but your psa 9 P.R. schmidt is as good or better than any dream card... it's simply awesome.
  • My choices for dream cards that never existed:

1909 T206 Joe Jackson (He would have been a canidate for the Southern League subset)

1940 PlayBall Ty Cobb (Cobb got dissed or he probably wanted too much money to appear in the "old timers" set)

1952 Topps Ted Williams (I know theres a story about why this didn't happen...anyone know about it?)

1979 Topps Ricky Henderson (If this were the case the Ozzie Smith would not be the key 79 Topps rookie card)

Oh well...at least there are still plenty of other cards that do exist that I can't afford...yet.image
  • I agree with gosoxbosox. The Ruth (or 2) would have made this complete! Still a rock solid set.

helionaut - by the time you fit Bake's afro onto the card, there's not enough room for a patch or an autograph.

I would also like a '54 Topps Campanella and a '56 Topps Dodgers Win World Series (however they would have titled it) card. Oh, and a '62 Topps Maury Wills card would be nice too (I'm OK with the picture they first used for it in 1975).

  • 1934 Goudeys are among the most beautiful cards I've ever seen. Ruth would have been amazing in that set.

From the '50's, there are so many cards missing. From Musial and Williams to Mantle and Mays. A 1954 Topps Mantle would be great.
  • A 1968 Seaver/Ryan rookie would have been sweet.

    -
    Jim
  • Any Red Man card featuring Jackie Robinson or Mickey Mantle would have been HUGE! I'm on board with a '52 Topps Ted Williams as well.
This thread was up last year and I think these threads are awesome. Someone actually posted a "What if" card...an '80 Topps Thurman Munson with the Indians complete with air-brushed cap. Those who follow such things recognize that was where Thurman was clearly headed had it not been for his untimely death in a plane crash late in the summer, 1979.

For my favorite set, 1977, single cards of Andre Dawson, Dale Murphy and Jack Clark (three of my all-time favorite players) would be great. Side-note: I really dislike multi-player rookie cards. I don't even consider them rookie cards at all and place no premium on them when I purchase. To me the '64 Rose and '69 Bench are rookie cards. It's just how I choose to look at it. I understand this is not common logic, but I really never enjoyed Ron Tompkins all that much.

    Great thread guys,

How about any Topps cards of Earl Campbell besides his rookie year? Actually I kinda like that Campbell only appeared on Topps cardboard one year. It adds some mystique to the cards.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Could someone please explain why Musial didn't appear on any Topps cards until the 1958 All-Star card? He was mentioned on the team cards (or at least on the 1957 Topps Cardinals Team Card that I have in front of me), and have heard only rumors as to why he didn't appear on cards in the regular set (wanted too much $, didn't want to be on cards, etc.). If anyone has anything they can offer on this, I'd be most appreciative, as I know that I'd love to see a 1957 Topps Stan Musial card. A 1957 Topps Harmon Killebrew would be nice as well.

A couple of broad Topps changes would open a slew of cards that never were. First, I'm not a fan of multiple rookies placed on one card, especially from different teams. Therefore a singular rookie card from the year in which the player appeared on a multiple card would be better. Second, issuing a Topps that reflects the stats of a player that retired during the off-season and wasn't issued a card the following spring.

This would create the following single player depiction cards that never were (examples):

    1962 Sam McDowell
    1962 Bob Uecker
    1962 Jim Bouton
    1963 Pete Rose

    1969 Rollie Fingers
    1969 Larry Hisle
    1969 Al Oliver
1969 Lou Pinella (he was on 3 multi-rookie cards)

    1980 Jesse Orosco
    1981 Fernando Valenzuela
1982 Cal Ripken (although we have the traded)
    1982 Kent Hrbek

Do others here not like these multi-player rookie cards. I'd gladly like to see more of the multi-player star special cards like 1968 Mays/Mantle/Killebrew instead of the head shots of 2 or 4 players. I do recall Topps doing this in recent Archives series, but they used the same photo (ex: 67 Carew & 75 Lynn). However, I think fresh new full shot photos would be much better. They could make a whole set of this.

As for players that didn't play the following year after retirement/tragedy are:

    1978 Brooks Robinson
I think I'm missing quite a few here

    Enjoy your collection!

A 62T Maury Wills. He won the MVP in 62, but didn't have a Topps card. For the 75 set, Topps ran a series of "MVP" cards and created a 62T Wills which never really existed.

I'd also like to see a regular 75T card for Al Kaline. There was a highlight card noting his 3000th hit, but no regular card.

A 72T card for Ernie Banks, perhaps.

And in a salute to DGF. . .a 77T Reggie in an Orioles uniform.

A 1983 Willie McGee, made by either of the big three, showing him reaching over the center field fence in the World Series to steal that home run. I was in fifth grade at the time, living in St. Louis, and though to this day I have no idea who hit that ball (Gorman Thomas?) it ranks as my first great moment watching the game.

he owned 2 of these cards in 1994. he was offered $3500 at one time, no idea if he accepted.

    more interesting facts about Olbermann-

-he wrote in SCD on and off from 1973 to 1985
-he wrote bio's for every card in the 1975 (1976, whatever the year) TCMA SSPC set. want proof? check out the back of card 630, Jimmy Reese. at the bottom of the card it states "Backs edited by Keith Olbermann"
-he took pictures that ended up on several cards, including 1981 Donruss Greg Minton and Mickey Rivers.
-he actually appears on a card- 1981 Topps Ken Landreaux. well, at least 1/8th of him (brown jacket on the right of the photo)

some day i'll copy the article this info came from (Sept. 94 issue of Collectors Sportslook) and post it on the boards. one of the best, most informative articles i've ever read

    1971 Topps Carlton Fisk
    1972 Topps Mike Schmidt
    1983 Topps/Fleer/Donruss of Don Mattingly

Also, a 1967 Topps Nolan Ryan/Tom Seaver on the same card would have been awesome! Any idea what it would go for?
