Guess what my wife asked me

My wife asked me a question that I can't believe she acutally asked. At her store they have display windows that face out onto the sidewalk. Well, every now and then they set out new displays for the people walking by to see, these displays are easily accessible to those inside the store. She wanted to take a good sized portion of my collection to make a coin collection display. Now she is going to try and get one of her co-workers to bring in a stamp collection to put out there. I'm thinking she won't get that collection either.

Yeah, it's a good idea but not a good idea. You can do it with cheapy coins, though. But it would probably increase both the cool factor and the theft factor.

Did you tell her that maybe moving some of the fine china, crystal, and silver ware out to the display might be a great idea too?

Interesting that you say that, as in Syracuse, New York just two weeks ago a $90,000 coin collection was stolen most likely by someone who knew the victim because that and some loose cash were the only things stolen.

Most of the said coins were Morgan dollars and Trade Dollars...How much you wanna bet a "newbie" e-bayer will have some Silver Dollars on line very soon?

Fishcooker-its an art and frame store. So they sell art supplies and do custom framing. In the past when they do those window displays they'll frame some of the objects that are in the window and others they'll leave loose. Things they've had in the past are school pictures with school supplies around it, military photos and medals with uniforms etc around. I just don't want (for obvious reasons) my collection just sitting there. I may let her use some circulated silver Washingtons, Franklins, Walkers and Buffalos that I have in rolls, though most of those I've given away.

Unless the store will take responsibility for anything happening to the coins and they know how much that may be in advance, I would not even consider it. Even then I might not do it because the collection itself is more valuable than the money

Just do it with a set of junk silver washingtons or something. They will look all neat and gray and artsy, plus your wife will be happy you "got involved" in her happenings.

I have some small 'sets' in frames - war coins - 20th century type - statehood quarters

I also have a bunch of cardboard like color state map coards that need finished - back and frame - that I am going finish and sell

I realize that nobody admits to collecting state quarters but it is a nice way to get children looking at coins a little differently than - this quarter can buy me this much candy

Tell her you will let them 'borrow some' if they frame them -

got any good bills (nice looking but not really rare) like a $1 silver certificate

a 5 coin nickel or dime type set would not be that valuable in circulated condition

maybe they could frame a mint proof set in the 'GSA-like" plastic

maybe they could make a clock - with 1964 silver halves/quarters/dimes as the 12 locations

you need something out of the deal for your risk (but maybe not, since you are talking about your wife)

Since its a art and frame store--donate a few inexpensive proof sets, a 1922, 23, 24 lower grade Peace dollar run and a few inexpensive first day covers from a stamp store. Let her mat and frame them nicely--makes a nice display--might entice some folks with a few keepsake silver dollars, etc., from Grandpa to have them matted and framed for wall display.
