What the hell? A hobo dollar!image

As for the price... I would guess either somebody either liked it a lot (it only takes two people) or somebody was shilling.

It is an extremely well done example. The high quality nickel pieces by well known carvers can also frequently bring hundreds of dollars. They're sort of like numismatic folk art.

That is really cool. Not $530 cool, but still very cool.

That is a modern creation, too. I didn't know folks were still doing that to coins.

  • It is a modern created piece, most likely done by a machine. When they are too good...like that one, they are not done by hand, but rather by machine. Same with "hobo" nickels, the real ones, done about 50+ years ago were done by hand and are very primitive, if you will, as apposed to the reproductions you typically see now days that are quite distinct and well done.

As you guess the real ones, done by hand have the history behind them and are worth considerable more money often selling for hundreds of dollars, while you can get the repros for about $10-$15.
