Is the Goverment going to retire the Kennedy half soon?

I keep hearing rumors that the circulating half dollar is going to be phased out.

It just hit me that this year is the 40th anniversary of the Kennedy half.

Mint is authorized to change designs on the half now, but to retire it as a circulating denomination would require an act of Congress.

I don't think that will happen any time soon. The Democrats will never let that happen. Look at the battle over the nickel with Virginians. Kennedy holds god like status with today's Dems.

I have a gut feeling that circulation strike halves will soon be history. However, I believe that they would continue to mint as mint sets and proofs to satisfy the politicians....Ken

Russ...I bet you do. The "Russ Hoard" would get to see the light of day.

    RGL...This is true.

When is the last time anyone recieved a half dollar from circulation?

They need to eliminate the Kennedy half now so there's enough time for it to become a "classic" before I retire. image

RGL... Most of the time I spend a Kennedy half, the cashier acts like the coin is from another planet. The only time I recieve halves in change is at the local coin auction.

You should have seen me try to get out of a parking garage once ... went to the wallet and no paper. But, I did have a $10 roll of JFKs in the console. Attendant said they didn't accept those ... I argued they were U.S. currency, payable for all debts public and private. A stalemate. I sat there as the cars piled up behind me ... they finally took them with the admonition not to try that trick again. image

    RGL...That is too funny.image
I thought it was the law that they had to accept any US currency.

    For what it's worth:

I was speaking with my local coin dealer who claimed to know the Denver mint director. Third-hand, he said the mint director favored getting rid of the half and the dime. The half was too big and didn't circulate and the dime was no more than two nickels and didn't circulate well either.

I've circulated (spent) around $600 in halves last year. I'm starting to get tired of looking through them because it's been awhile since I've found anything worth keeping.
Some call it an accumulation not a collection

It isn't, although many people mistakenly believe that it is.

itsnotjustme.... The rolls and bags the mint sells are circulation strikes even though they are dispersed into circulation. The mint set coins are slighty different struck coins.... the planchets are nicer and they are struck with much more pressure than the circulation strikes.

AJ2525....They better keep the dime. I would rather carry one dime than two nickels any day.

I got one in change recently. We couldn't be so lucky as to retire the Kennedy.
