Didn't they not have RD until 1865?

Jeremy,
They had bronze (and thus color designations) in 1864. There are two types for that year.
Russ, NCNE
However from looking at the pic on my system looks like a bit of rub on the diamonds (If so au58)
If no rub still looks like there is spots right in front of the nose and mouth so I would say MS64Rd
<< <i>Hmmmnnnn Could be a PR66 >>
Proof?? With all that cartwheel effect? No, it is clearly mint state and clearly RED. I will go with MS-66Red as MS-67 it just a tad too high.
Tom
- also, immediately sell me all your AU-58 Indians.
Thanks to all who guessed.

PCGS MS67 w/o color designation.

Don't think that didn't cross my mind! In person, it would never pass for a red coin but it might as a CN coin. But then again, it's worth more as a pattern than a MS67 CN cent.
Does this 64 Pattern have the "L" on it, since I can't even make out all the diamonds there is now way I can see if it is there or not.
Of the 64 patterns how many come with or without the "L", are the diags to check the the 64 bronzes by either rounded or pointed bust, follow suit with the patterns as well.
Thanks a bunch.
Will check the books tonight when I get home for a more complete reply. There are quite a few 1864 patterns given the mix of L, no L, Bronze, Copper nickel, thick/thin planchets and MS/Proof formats.
There are 12 Judd combinations in the pop. reports for 1864. With certification, it's hard to collect them all as some are misattributed and with others, you can't tell the planchet thickness. The only way would be to break them out, measure/weigh and send for SEM-EDX analysis. You would truly have to be a hard core collector to do so.
Or dealer??
