Happy New Year

I looked at the Heritage web site and noticed that THE Infamous 1963 Lincoln Cent is Bid at $35,000 plus the juice. The grand total is $40,250.

Anyone want to bet this coin will go above $100,000 ?

Stewart: Perhaps the reserves kicking in earlier tonight may have played a role? Maybe, maybe not.

P.S. When the coin was bid at $25,000 plus the juice, I had nailed that guess in the contest - oh well image

    Yes, you're missing my contest!

Better move quick, less than two hours to get your guess in. image

According to the PCGS Price Guide, a DCAM 69 goes for $600.

If anyone cares to qoute my whole answer here from Russes contest I think more then my guess what I said after the guess was right on the mark.

The registry has been good for people that "make" coins to sell them and for stirring beginning collector interest, but this kind of thing could one day come back and bite this hobby as bad as the grading mess did 20 years ago.

Watch people come out of the woodwork to defend this and tell those of us who think this is bad for the future of the hobby to shut up.

I don't know how to attack this statement without defending the price of
the cent which I really don't want to do. One thing's for sure though, there
are very few people engaged in this segment of the hobby and they are
neither neophites nor mainstream collectors. It seems highly unlikely that
a collapse in the prices of some of these coins would have a far ranging
    effect on coins in general.

While it hasn't been done yet, it's also not necessary nor relevant to bunch
all later date coins in this same group merely because they are later date.

Nope, only the image is mine. The coin belongs to another collector. Les is a Barber fanatic, so I figured I'd slip him a little eye candy as a holiday gift. image

That half is obviously overgraded as the surrounding plastic is white... image

Amazing that you can buy one 1963 PF70 [spots and all] or you can buy about 8 of those halves. Hmmmm. image

  • Whodda thunk it. The prices on the mint state stuff is scary as well, but the infamous 63 takes the cake for now.....

I wonder if that penny is in David's grading contest? Would really love to hear the explanation for the grading of this cent. Of course, this would ensure that nobody would maintain their 100 point start.

Oh my. If that coin sells for over 40K again, I may have to take back everything I've said about moderns image

Actually, I stand by what I have maintained. No one can consistently pick 69s and 70s out of a pile. Combine that with the services maintaining that they "market grade" (i.e. thereby justifying changing standards - inconsistency - over time) and you have a true shell game. The 69DCAM at $600 has a lot more "legs" under it and would be the coin I bought, if I was into these things. As long as I've been collecting (15 years or so) I have never paid 10x or 100x to get to the next grade. It makes no darn sense to me & never will.

I think Wondercoin may be right that the current bid is the reserve. The other coins I'm watching all also took big leaps in bid prices to levels that make sense for a reserve amount.

    Man,

Lets hope it's a reserve. I cant believe someone knowing what they're doing would pay that for that coin. There are so many "nicer" and "rarer" coins out there to be had for that kind of $$$.

    David
  • Russ, that Barber is nice! And, uhm... too the people who apparently aren't very observant... I believe it is a Quarter not a Half... uhm... the reverse clearly states "Quarter Dollar" unless I'm just really stupid, or maybe the mint had a misprint? *shrug* Anyway's, that's a pretty toning there, what does she grade?

Amazing. The reserve kicked in, and somebody comes back and bids it up. Now at $43,700.00. The seller is actually going to make a profit!

No, Russ. The seller is a Prophet. A numismatieer seer. A genius non-parallel.
