WOO HOO!! my first CC Morgan $

anablepanablep Posts: 5,160 ✭✭✭✭✭
I purchased my first CC Morgan, an 1884-CC in MS63/64 from my local coin dealership... used some Christmas money to buy myself a present. Actually I had a choice between an 1884-CC toned pale yellow in MS65-ish for $330 or the MS63/64 no toning for $169. The non-toned coin looked so much better I really couldn't figure out why the toned one was so much more expensive apart from the (marginally) better grade.
Anyway, I'm thrilled and will try to post a picture when I learn how to do that...
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

  • Congratulations! I hope you enjoy her. My first CC Morgan was also an 1884-CC in PCGS MS64 that looks MS65. I got her about 4 years ago for $135 in person from Rare Coins of New Hampshire. I was traveling on business, and took a side trip to see the place for myself. I was reluctant to spend that much, as I thought it was a bit too high, and now I look back and laugh.

Dollardude is quite right. The first is always the one you'll remember. There are those collectors who for whatever reason prefer the toned coins, and are willing to pay a premium for them.I do believe in this case though it was the higher grade.Collect what you like.

    Congratulations!

My first CC Morgan is a 1884, too. Mine resides in an old green rattler as an MS60--This sucker is an upgrade canidate, I just haven't taken the time to send it in, but it should be a 63. Some of my MS64 Morgans have more bag marks and scratches! I purchased it back in the 1980 for about fifty bucks.

My first Carson City Morgan was an 1890. The coin is not graded but I recieved from one of my grandparents so it does not really matter to me if it is graded or not. Either way I will always cherish it.image
  • GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFT YOU BOUGHT YOURSELF. I STILL HAVE NOT FOUND A CC TO BUY YET. GOOD GRADE, HOPE TO SEE IT SOON

Carson City Morgans are special. I got my first two from the last GSA sale. An 1880 & an 1881. $45 each. It was all I could do to scrape up the money then but I'm glad I did.

An AU-55. (David Hall graded it for me at the last Long Beach Show.)
  • it wasn't that many years ago that gsa dollars would languish in dealer cases at $75 to $90.
wow, have the times (and market) changed

I thought it was EF. It was a pleasant surprise to find out I was wrong.

David was giving free grading opinions at the show and I was there with the coin. I'll take anything for free.

  • Nice job, MrLee! Now just WHERE was that gas station again?!?!

If anyone has a nice 1880-CC in about MS63, please PM me. This is the last one I need to complete my CC's! image
