Hi, I'm new here (and a question) Update: answer to question...

Hello all! Been collecting since I was ten or so (in early '80s) then stopped for awhile (college=$$) and started again after marriage and settled into a new home.

I recently purchased a morgan dollar from a coin shop in my area and wanted to know what you would have done if you were in the same situation... I'll give the answer to what I did on 12/23.
I wanted to buy an 1888-O and was presented with 2 choices: both $1 were prooflike, raw and uncirculated. One was a solid MS 64, lesser PL with a fairly weak strike on the eagle's breast and liberty's hair while the second coin had a very strong strike for an O mint, more obvious PL qualities but an obvious MS 63. What would you have done?
Thanks...
Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

Welcome to the boards newbie!!! image

Where they both the same price? If I thought one was more proof like than the other I probably would take a chance with it grading 64 and have gone with it. Need to see both coins to be sure.

Asked the dealer if he had any 1964 proof sets.

I would lean toward the one with the better strike, assuming luster was equal on both.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

bearcave: Yes, they were both the same price (within about a dollar: $55 vs $56 for MS 63 vs MS 64 respectively)

Russ: 1964 proof sets hadn't even crossed my mind. I'm usually very tunnel visioned when shopping (for anything). I've got this search image of what I'm looking for and try to filter out all the rest!image

    Welcome aboard.

I usually opt for the stronger strike.

    A big welcome to ya!

Sorry, I don't do to well with Morgans.
  • Welcome from another Morgan fanatic! I mostly concur with what was already said, i.e., either go with the lower grade but better strike, OR go with the one YOU think has the better eye appeal. Good luck to your future endeavors! image

I would have chosen the one that you liked better, whatever that means to you!

I bet that one "did it for you" more than the other; that's the one to get. If you still can't decide, just flip a coinimage

I don't think it's a question that can be answered based on words-- sometimes you just have to see the coins... I would have gone with the one that caught my eye and I liked better, which I'd only know by seeing them.

Welcome. tough call. It would go to the one that looked nicest for me.

  • the MS63PL is my choice, plus the strong strike on a coin not known for it makes it much more appealing.

  • Welcome aboard Anablep,
I, too would go with the stronger strike. That usually attracts more
buyers if or when the time comes to sell.

Another thing to contemplate, or complicate, is the possible scarcity
or rarity of the weaker strike. That could influence it's value.

    Good hunting,
    Skipper
  • I hate what you are going through. At the price stated I would have gotten both. I have done that with other coins, I do not collect morgans as of yet, so I in a sense made no decision. Except to buy both coins.

After asking the dealer if he had a tawl single sister, I would buy the one that had the best eye appeal.

I would always take the one with the best strike. So, the 63PL is what I would have bought for $55.00. image

I always prefer strong strike coins....they may grade higher than you realize.

A weaker strike is a limiter on the same.
  • I like proof like coins. I would pick the one with the frostiest devices.

Thank you all for the nice welcome to the forum...

I guess my thinking coincides well with you all... I chose the 63PL (much better eye appeal), but as one person mentioned to buy both coins, well, I didn't think of that...
