The worst performing US coin market segment(s) for 2004 will be...

What do you feel the WORST performing US coin market segment(s) will be in 2004?

My predictions:

1. Moderns in anything less than the "ultimate" grade. Also, any modern, regardless of grade, that is not in a PCGS holder.

2. Common gold coins.

All glory is fleeting.

Not a "market segment". Doesn't count.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • still funny though

  • I think gold will continue to rise and we'll see even "common" gold coins increase in value...

  • lincoln's after the $39,000 "penny" sells for <$25,000. The linc's (proof) will loose value when a realistic price is paid. I think some collectors thought there would be another POP 1 Early Linc and now the bubble is about to burst. Only the very heavy hitters need to worry. The "run of the mill" PR70DCAM's will remain in the $1,500 to $2,000 area.
PCGS sets under The Thomas Collections. Modern Commemoratives @ NGC under "One Coin at a Time". USMC Active 1966 thru 1970" The real War.
  • 3 cent nickle pieces, they have never in the last 13 years gone up in value as a series. Some might say better dates or dcam proofs, but you could say that about almost any series except some that don't have proofs like the standing quarter.

Unfortunatley, golds popularity is hurting silver type coin values. Barber & Seated coins [I'm not including seated dollars] for the most part have remained flat the last few years while gold genaric has taken off. I sure wish I hadn't sold my generic gold when I had to raise money eariler this year but I would have sold more of the coins I love to make up the difference, oh well.

I think gold is the big unkown next year, if deficit spending keeps exploding and the job market doesn't start to have a big surge before the Nov. elecxtion gold might go up bigtime next year, on the other hand if the deficit starts to fall and the job market and overall economy continues to improve gold could lose some of the gains it made this year.

The President claims he didn't lie about taxes for those earning less then $250,000 a year with public mandated health insurance yet his own justice department has said they will use the right of the government to tax when the states appeals go to court.
  • I think and hope everything in gold drops...and everything silver will rise in glory!

  • modern coins in lesser grades will get hurt in 2004
  • "modern coins in lesser grades will get hurt in 2004 " I agree. I also believe we may see some cooling off of the entire market next year as peoples attentions are drawn back to more conventional investments. I know we are in for a real run of inflation, and what we have seen the last 18 months is the mental attitude of people changing toward that, but it just has not taken effect as a fact yet. There is a strong possibility that Silver Eagles and common slabbed gold will pick up next year, but I think many thousands of even high grade moderns will be slabbed next year and that market will become very soft.

I think we have one more year of madness with gold going up, all the coin market continuing to boom, with probably a little bit of cooling by mid-year. 2005 will slump and all the old sleepers will go back to sleep. I think Jeff nickels, Rosies, and Wash quarters, along with a few selected Barbers and some of the IH proofs with low mintage and low prices are the way to go. Also, whenever the mint sells something which is gold and a commemorative, buy a couple of the MS ones, they don't sell (everybody wants the shiny proofs) and are often low mintage.

Of course, that's just my opinion. Let's keep it just among us, OK?

"Rainbow" Morgans in lesser grades. For example, today's $800.00 "Monster" MS63 1881-S color Morgan will be tomorrow's $400.00 Morgan. Collectors will demand COLOR APPEAL and GRADE.

Gee, that's really stepping out on a limb.

My prediction is that Walkers will tank. They've had a great run and everybody is recommending them.

Common gold might be okay for 2004.Recent reports in Barron's say that $500 - $600 /oz. is not unreasonable.
