Will a slight rim bump result in a bag for a proof?

I have a nice 1938 proof Jeff that has a tiny rim bump on the obverse, either of mint manufacture or it has been dropped at some point in the intervening 65 years. I don't feel like wasting the money submitting it if it will draw an automatic bag. I've never tried to have a proof graded with a tiny rim ding, so I don't know if such coins get slabbed or not? Anyone? Thanks ...

I doubt it would be bagged, but it would grade much lower.

It might grade, but you might only get a PR-61 or 62 on it. It depends on how big it is, and whether or not the grader notices it during its brief inspection.

    hey Randy

no personal experience in submitting and receiving a B/B or lowered grade for something like that. my hunch and common sense says it isn't worth the submission fee to find out the answer. probably best to hang onto it or find a buyer while giving an honest appraisal of the coin.

besides, if i know you, the purchase price was low. so your downside is probably a big fat zero.

Thanks, Al ... confounding how you know my downside ... image
  • Randy....sounds like a candidate for a nice raw/album set. 1938 proofs are always in demand. Does a holder hide the ding?

Keets...guess the actress and movie this is from:
