1935 Quarter, what do you feel it grades?

I just started getting back into coin collecting and this was the first result for coin collecting forums. Good place, I've been reading the threads for a few weeks now, learned quite a lot. Decided to finally join with some questions and things and hopefully learn even more about my hobby. First I'm wondering what you guys would grade this quarter, it's in a slab, my first slab at that. Got a hell of a deal on it on ebay just this week. If it wasn't for you guys I probably would've done something dumb like buy a PCI or ACG graded coin, but no this is a PCGS slab. Enough rambling, here's the coin:

Hard to tell from the photo. I don't see any wear on the hair line. Maybe 64?
    US Navy CWO3 retired. 12/81-09/04

Looks like too much chatter on the face to be a MS64.imo
  • My guess would be MS63.
We are finite beings, limited in all our powers, and, hence, our conclusions are not only relative, but they should ever be held subject to correction. Positive assurance is unattainable. The dogmatist is the only one who claims to possess absolute certainty.

    First POTD 9/19/05!!

  • Those dots on the face are on the slab itself, I could get a closer picture, but not one that would fit under the 50k rule I don't think.

Is that in a slab? I was thinking 2x2.

My grade guess is MS63, MS64/65 if those marks are not on the cheek.

  • PCGS graded it MS66, picked it up for $100, heh probably is a 65 oh well.
  • That's cool, I'm trying to learn how to grade Mint State coins, but it's tough. At the moment I'm more or less hoarding silver JFK's, I picked up $300 worth of 50c today and ofcourse it's easy to pick out the silver, but grading it, I'm at a loss. I see say a 64 jfk that has decent luster, looks like it wasn't circulated and there doesn't appear to be any ticks of any sort on the focal points. My guess is an MS65, but what must it include to become a 66 or even a 67? The way I learned it was MS65 is GEM BU, basically a coin that looks like no one's touched it.

Anybody who believes he or she can grade accurately a one dimensional scanned image is crazy! You grade under proper lighting with several differnt magnifications ,starting at the rim of the coin working inward!

  • << <i>You grade with several differnt magnifications ,starting at the rim of the coin working inward! >>

That is crazy. You will really micro grade if you do that and waste 4-5 minutes per coin. Use your naked eye and look quickly. 15 seconds and a grade should be in your head.

Cameron, you of all people know better than that having been an outstanding young Numismatist. I can throw you a Gem looking quarter -let you grade it with your naked eye -then throw you a 5X and all of a sudden that great looking coin in your hand that your naked eye said was uncirculsted is full of dig, blemishe and won't even grade MS 60! You want proof that I know what I'm talking about? Click on to my link and then tell me who has an eye for coins!

I disagree. A MS-60 by the naked eye and a 60 by the loupe are different grades alltogether. The grading services grade by the naked eye and the rest of the market has evolved that way also. I know a 5x brings out stuff, but then you basically have dropped the last 10 grades from the graph and made MS-60 the best grade possible with a loupe. It's the same thing.

  • I see no problem with the 66 grade. That is a very well struck coin, especially for an otherwise notoriously flat date.

All I,m saying is we've all probably found a nice looking coin in our pocket change and went"OOOOOOOOOOOOOOhhh!" You put it to a simple 5X and all of a sudden it's a pig! NO ONE has an eye to ACCURATELY GRADE with the naked eye! In the ANA grading courses it tells us all how to propely grade coins-under proper lighting starting at the edge working inward. Like I said ...you need proof of an eye, just click on below and see how many times the word crossover appears!

  • << <i>Cameron who told you the grading services no longer use a glass? I am about 99.9% sure your wrong >>

I heard it from every major grader teaching the Advanced coin grading class. I never saw one loop at the PCGS grading room at the last FUN show. small things like half dimes and 3 cents, yes, but all the rest they don't. I am not trying to argue. Just what I have learned.

It may begin with eye appeal but I assure you when one point can make the difference between hundreds of dollars ans tens of thousands of dollars=there will be some serious scrutiny with eyepieces!

Here is a link to the auction he won!! I would have said 64 from the pic. But it is indeed in a 66 holder and for $106.50, its a good deal. I think I also paid $150 for my MS66.

    Link to auction
HAVE A GREAT DAY! THE CHOICE IS YOURS!!!!
  • Hehe you found it image
Wished I'd had more available funds at the time, guy was selling quite a few 65's and 66's by PCGS standards that were all great deals, now he's got a bunch of PCI nonsense I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.
  • Goinguy, Coinguy and njcoincrank were all ex PCGS/NGC graders. They can also put in their opinion here.
