Bye Bye 12-S :-(

It looks like the Post office has lost the 1912-S Liberty Nickel I won from the B&M auction a few weeks back. image

It mailed on the 11th, and the tracking vanishes at the PO that B&M sent it from. B&M are working on tracing it for me, but I don't feel hopeful after 8 days since ship, and with the trail ending so early. I'll of course get the cash back from the insurance, but it took me forever to find that coin in a state I liked...

I'm not really motivated to look again.

The people at B&M have been very friendly and helpful with this, great folks!

Yeah right, I'm sure they "lost" it.....right into some stealthy mail carrier's collection of other "lost" beauties!

I hope a pleasant surprise comes out of this....this is a tought time of year for the postal service after all.
  • That sucks rhino. I was cheated out of a coin the same way a few weeks ago. The seller was nice enough to reimburse me the money that I had sent him (I guess he is going to fight the post office for the insurance money). Like you though I would rather have the coin.

Sad to hear that. Sounds like a beautiful coin. Here's a not so high grade one to take your mind off your loss.

There in lies the tragedy. Sorry to hear.

That sucks. The USPS needs to do more about these "all too often" incidents.

Some old mailman somewhere has a GREAT COLLECTION of coins, that's all I can say.

If it was sent by registered mail, seems like it would be a short list of potential suspects.

This reminds me of an ongoing saga. For the last year & a half, the California Franchise Tax Board has owed a client an income tax refund of $4,200, but for some mysterious reason, they can't get a refund check delivered to an address in Mexico City.

I recently petitioned them to send the refund check out yet again, but this time to an address in San Francisco. Hopefully they do that, but at this point, I wouldn't bet on it.

  • An Update:

Sue at B&M called me a bit ago, and seems to have shaken some info out of the PO.

B&M gave the coin to thier local PO on Thursday the 11th.

It proceeded to sit there until Tuesday the 16th. No one is quite sure why. It then went on it's way. This goes miles as to answering why I've not seen it yet.

The PO seems to think that I'll get it tomorrow. They found a trail for it with thier internal records. All the online tracing continues to produce 'no such package'.

So perhaps I WILL see it image

How very annoying overall. But B&M has been great through it all. Thanks for all the support folks!

I'd much rather have the coin than the $$, too!
  • Alas...the pleasant surprise...
  • Update:

Saturday the 20th. No coin at the PO.

Perhaps Monday. The PO continues to play hide and seek with the coin. Grrrrrrrrr.

Good luck on that, Myriads. What a loss that would be! It's good to hear that B&M is so concerned and is working hard on their end.

Remember- a Registered package, even if it doesn't sit at a PO for a while, can take much more time due to the secuirty with which it travels... yours just seems to want a vacation image

Myriads, I sure hope it turns up for you, I know what a difficult time you had searching for one,. If B@M sent it registered, then I'm pretty sure it will turn up this week.

The ones you have to watch are the firms that have private insurance carriers and elect to send packages under regular insured mail, these have a lot more likely chance of gettin gone(stolen/lost) vs a Registered package.
  • Seeing as the LA post office held the thing until the 16th (5 days? what the heck???), I'm not as concerned as I was yesterday morning when we had no trail. With holiday shipping loads, today was the first day I'd have expected it. Monday is the one that it will probably show upon. I'll not get worried again until then :-)

I have faith in PO's Reg/Insured system. It's pretty darn good overall. In years of having things shipped this is the first that has ever wandered oddly. Wish they had the same capacity as Fedex to show exactly where the packages are with a click of a mouse, but one makes do!

Since the 12-S will live in my collection for life, perhaps it's taking it's last chance to enjoy the world at large before meeting all it's sisters in the Capital Nickel home :-)

I'll keep you updated come the new week.

The Christmas load really slows them down. I had a priority shipment go out on December 15, and just received it today. That is five to six days for a two to three day package. I'm glad they found the package after five days, and hopefully you will see it before Christmas.

2 years ago I looked for over a year for the right 1937 s Boone. I finally found one and it was mailed Dec 18th in California and I figured I`d have it for Christmas. It arrived in Connecticut on Jan. 24th!! I had given up and was very happy in the end.
  • I stick with my pair of 12-S Fugios.
  • And the conclusion of the tale.

The 12-S arrived this morning. image To my great surprise, it looks even better then the images that were on the B&M site that I judged it to bid upon. As is so often the case, the luster totaly failed to show in the photos. It has steel blue/light purple tone on it, and it has toned in such a way as to look like a cameo Proof! I am deeply pleased. It was worth the wait.

Thanks for all the support in the thread folks. I'd edit the title, but I don't know how.

  • Alas, unlike many of you, I have no digi-cam to take those wonderful colorful tone shots. Only a scanner, and my attempts have produced solid shots of the coin, but of course with no tone. It looks all flat and grey. I'll try again later, but I'm not hopeful.

  • Here are some shots. The luster still doesn't show well sadly. But one can see hints of it. The fields are a mix of blue and purple while the devices are slightly brighter and cause a cameo effect.
