whats wrong with the face of my Morgan?

There are lines going over her - are these light whizzing? album slides? flip slide marks?

there are also some other ones I can see under hi magnification, but they must be on the planchet as the follow the devices.

Will the lines shown drop a few points or bodybag?

Cleaning would also be demonstrated with hairlines visible in the fields. I believe your Morgan feel victim to those plastic slide album pages.

  • I agree with Braddick - those look like album slide marks - I've seen them on a lot of barber halves and they look exactly like that.

Do the lines only go in one only one direction? if so the coin was probably slid along the surface of a countertop and if they are not too noticable a low MS grade is possible. If they change direction as you tilt it in the light I would say it's been cleaned and will be bagged. They look pretty deep to be caused by plastic slides in an album. mike image

Look again guys! They show up in the field in front of Liberty's neck and chin.

They are signs of a light cleaning. Slide marks wouldn't show in the fields there.

I was going to suggest roller marks from when the silver stock was rolled into sheets before the planchets were stamped out but I don't think so.

  • Something brushed against it. it's too confined to one area to have fell victim to whizzing or die polishing. Maybe there was a smudge and someone took a rag to it a lightly rubbed it.

Buyer and seller of vintage coin boards!
  • There are a few on the field, but most are on the face - making me think probably not album slides - unless someone decided to use this coin to push in the plastic and get the slide started

If this was a light wipe, would it get bodybagged?
  • IMO:
    It was Cleaned.
And will definately get bodybagged from PCGS.
Other "slabbers" I cannot say. I only do PCGS.

sinin, I am really not the expert on morgan dollars but I see marks like this on ms63 and down gold as long as they are not too deep and are hard to see it could still be slabbed. Can they be seen at first glance or do you have to struggle to see them and have the coin at just the right angle? mike
  • well - i struggle to see them and just at right angle

but I have gotten 'cleaned' bodybags back from PCGS before and had to look at the coin for a few minutes to figure out where ->

I am not sure how the graders can pick stuff up so well in 5-10 seconds

    What mint is it?
  • the mint is O

1891-O are among the weakest struck Morgans I have heard

The lines are not raised are they?
If not I think it will bodybag, if it was a CC it might get a slab.

I've seen these types of marks get bagged at PCGS and NGC.

IMO, not cleaning. the lines are too straight and in the same direction, plus the luster looks to still be present, and the coin does not look like it ever "needed" a cleaning.

But something abrasive rubbed against the coin, could be an album slide, could be coin was slid across a countertop or some surface, could have been some "grit" present that got the fields too, could even have slid against the canvas of an original mint bag. Who knows? IMO the lines are not a positive thing, but not as negative as generally perceived. Would it slab at P or N? no probably not. should it "net" grade as if the marks were like any other contact mark like a bagmark or very minor wear. IMO, yes.

  • Mz. Liberty was riding in the back of a pickup truck barreling down the freeway when they hit a bump and she was thrown out. Her head played kissy face with the pavement and that was it. She was subsequently slabbed AND placed in a body bag by the county coroner and ...... tha, tha, tha, tha, that's all folks!

I think that they are abum slide marks. These are fairly common on thick coins like Morgan dollars that could easily come in contact with the slides as the collector moved them back and forth.

You think that's bad, look at this...

I think you just chalk those up as "hairlines" and be done with it-I don't think there're from cleaning either. As long as the luster remains on the coin, and the coin doesn't give the appearance of "cleaning", I'm almost positive that coin would grade at pcgs. That's not nearly enough hairlining to preclude a bodybag. I've had blatently wiped morgans with hundreds of hairlines on both sides of the coin still find there way into a pcgs slab. At worst (provided nothing else wrong with the coin) you may take a hit in the eye appeal dept. and have it net graded down a point.

I've seen marks that were 1/4 of this size get bagged for cleaning. On at least 2 of my dollars. At PCGS. Similar types of marks, too. Maybe I was lucky that day.
