Surprise in the mail - 1800 Eagle!

BarryBarry Posts: 10,100 ✭✭✭
Received a Registered package in the mail today from one of the major auction houses. Hmm..., I thought to myself, I don't think I'm waiting for any coins...

In it is a very pretty 1800 G$10. Also included is an invoice for 5 figures. I know I didn't bid on this coin, but I did bid on a 1799. Call up the auction house. Yup, their error, send it back. Not a Christmas present, oh well...

Do you have a picture? I would be cool just to hold it in my hand for a few hours. I'd love to own one some day. I'm sure the rightful owner is sitting on pins and needles waiting for it image

So ANR mistakenly sent you an empty box with an invoice? image

That is one nice eagle, too bad you did not get to keep it. The less ethical could claim the box was empty. What could the auction house do?

Thank God some of us have morals.

Uh . . . I believe there would be some hot pursuit of either the coin or the money . . .

    With juice, $11.5K.

Thank God some of us have morals.

It's not the first time morality kicked in on a coin deal. A couple of years ago, I bought a few coins from a dealer at a show. When I got home, I noticed he added wrong and undercharged me by $100. I mailed him a check with an explanation. In the past, when I ordered by mail from him, he used to require payment before sending anything. Since then he sends me stuff on approval.

  • can you imagine the look on the person's face who was supposed to get this coin when they open their package? image
  • Barry,
That's interesting. I bid 5600.00 for lot #144 in ANR's last auction. I was out bid by a mile, but a week later a received a package with lot # 145 ( worth about 1900.00) along with an invoice for 5600 plus the juice.
They admitted it was their error and asked that I return the lot asap. I wonder whats up over there????

Wow, what a neat Christmas present that would have been. I commend you for your honesty. Thanks for the picture too.

    Bustman,
That's interesting because this is lot 983 and I bid (and lost) on lot 982. The old n+1 computer glitch!

Man, if I received that in the mail I am afraid I would have to send them a $11.5 dollar check and say thank you for your mistake. I can't return the coin, I have fallen in love.

    What a beaut.

Yes auction houses do miss up, although this example is worse that the one that happened to me.

I was the high bidder on a token that was in a mail bid / live auction. When I saw the prices realized and noted that the selling price was lower than my mail bid, I called the auctioneer to find out what happened. He admitted that he had mishandled my bid, that an underbidder had ended up with the piece.

I was steamed image because I had been looking for this item for several years, and this was the first one that I seen in quite some time. To make a long story short, I did not get the item; the buyer ended up with the piece for less than he should have paid; and the consigner probably got less than he should have been paid.

No matter how much you might love the coin, you have got to return it. That's only fair.
