Okay, let's have a contest involving the infamous $39,100 Lincoln - with prize!

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
As many of you know, the renowned PCGS 1963 PR70DCAM Lincoln is back at auction again. The first time around, it sold for $39,100 with the juice.

Here is the auction - as of this post it is already over $7,000 with buyer's premium.

Guess the final selling price, including the juice. One guess per person, and edited posts will be disqualified. Whoever comes the closest without going over, wins! All guesses must be in by Wednesday, 12.31.03 at 8 PM Pacific time. That's seven days from close of internet bidding. Any posted after that will be disqualified. In the event the coin has a reserve and doesn't sell, the contest is void.

The prize: A PCGS graded PR68 Accented Hair Kennedy Half Dollar. Note: It's a dog, though. Shouldn't be in a 68 holder. I want it the hell out of my stash, so I'm unloading it on some poor schmuck unfortunate enough to win this contest. image

Have at it.

Note: Edited to change contest deadline.

  • Shame on everyone!

It doesn't matter whether you think the price it sold for originallly was too little or too much. It is wrong to put down a coin thats being offered for sale-even if you think its just harmless guessing. Dealers (especially) should know better than to make any comments.

I do know all about this coins history and what it looks like. I do not know who bought the coin nor do I have any interest in it, but I do NOT like seeing people who are not in the market for that coin make comments that could hurt the coins value. Its more of an ethical issue. This isn't a million dollar coin that you can play over under on.

Show some respect and put yourself in the collectors shoes. Do you really want to read your coin probably won't sell BEFORE the auction? Thats plain RUDE!

Laura, you want to talk about ethics? Here's a coin with obvious flaws graded PR70. Rather than turn it in for a grade guarantee and getting it into a proper holder, it's being sold with the description of course, there are no handling marks or other flaws of any significance to be found. The 'ethical' people here are the ones pooh-poohing this coin and revealing it for what it is, not trying to pander it off for thousands and thousands of dollars and cashing in on a grading service's mistake! So if the coin's value is hurt, do I feel bad for the seller or for Heritage? In short, hell no!

Laura are really telling me that if I have no interest in that coin that I am not allowed to voice my opinion on what I think the value of it is? Did you express this opinion to Scott Travers when he wrote his article reprinted on the CDN website? If anything I think threads like this are educational to the collector side of the equation. Do you think that someone who is seriously interested in acquiring this coin will care about the opinions of those who aren't interested in it?

You know as well as I do that the value of this coin has been determined by the insert on the slab and not by the coin itself, please explain to me why this is healthy for the collecting community? To me the only possible unethical issue in the resale of this coin again is the possible overgrading of this coin due to an obvious change in it since it was holdered. I see no mention of that in the current description of this coin. Are you saying its ok to sell this coin with that insert?

It is wrong to put down a coin thats being offered for sale

The fact that the coin is up for sale is irrelevant. It's either OK to trash someone's coin or not.

BTW, it wouldn't surprise me if the seller is selling because of comments that he or she read on this Forum. So you could argue that the knife cuts both ways. Maybe we inspired the consignor cut his or her losses. (Edited to say that if that's the case, the consignor is obviously grateful for our collective input.) Surely the consignor would not expect us to turn silent as soon as the coin was placed on the auction block.
