I think all here should really question if this charity is legit? He claims to represent PCGS in his auction and and even sounds like he is endorsed by the ANA? If you are a true listed charity I think you should have no problem of proving me wrong and I hope you do prove me wrong but until then I am very leery of giving any money. mike

I have also repeatedly made public all Board members' Names and what they have done. Stick around and you will see this unfold right before your eyes...you will even see where all net proceeds go. If you're looking to stir s%i@ you're just a little late.Nalamolly5, SM1, Manofcoins, Razorface, Massscrew etc-all their Names and donations are public knowledge just as is the item# is. What you think ,do or say are entirely your perogatives-meanwhile I have not only my own work to do-it would seem I have quite a few bags to fill-OH BY THE WAY-which are comprised MOSTLY of MY coins! Boom, I think you pretty much answered my question about being legit. A real charity would have some credentials and respond with some facts not name calling. I can't believe they are letting you post this stuff here and the language you use is enough to get you removed for good. image mike

So this "Charity" deal was all nice at the beginning. Gets a few endorsements and feels it can slam members now who ask about it's legitimacy? IMO you can take this "Charity" and take a hike DUDE.

Don't most truly successful charity drives begin with those very words? I bet UNICEF is looking to adopt the same language in their pitch right now. Man, hearing that just makes me want to give and give.

Calling people names really makes me want to run out and give them my hard earned $$. If I want to help needy people I'd donate to my church, I trust them and they really help people and they are also very polite. You know it doesn't hurt to say Christmas, that is why some of you guys are so messed up, you've replaced Christ with X.

Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

image The righteous are bold as a lion! Nuff said! I DO NOT have a problem saying God, JESUS CHRIST , HOLY SPIRIT, or writing the word/NAME JESUS CHRIST or CHRISTMAS all day /everyday/ everywhere. . Ver shortly I will bring someone in here that will straighten all this up! Let's gang-bag Boom! RIGHT! I'm STILL standing and I'm NOT running! I'm here now and when all is said and done and this Charity is over and all you cynics are proven wrong-we'll see who is righteous and who is man enought to step forward and say , "I'm sorry for judging you Boom!" If you truly have God or Christ in your heart and give from the heart and if I am a thief-you STILL have performed a charitable deed!

Boom -- my only suggestion is that you should watch the use of the ANA and PCGS as actual sponsors or those that are providing an endorsement of this supposed charity auction. That is of course unless the ANA and PCGS have provided written and/or oral confirmation of such directly to you.

<< <i>all the fine folks with whom we are affiliated at PCGS! Thank you and Happy Holidays from pittbreeder, the ANA, PCGS and the entire Numismatic Community! >>

This could be very misleading. It almost like saying -- "well, I talked to Bob at Church today and he gave me $5.00 for my charity, so I guess the Pope/Vatican endorses my charity." Most companies and organizations take the use of their name very seriously and try to protect it from being infringed upon.

This is the first year the Boom Foundation is operational so they are still working on the process.

For $25 the Boom Foundation will send you a bag of coins, probably worth about $10. After his expenses, he will donate 100% of his profits (after eBay and PayPal fees) to a charity of his choice, and deduct his donation off his income taxes.

Of course you could donate $25 to a charity of your choice and take a tax deduction, but if you went this route the Boom Foundation wouldn't be able to sell coins.

A $25 donation to a charity of your choice, or buy coins from the Boom Foundation. A hard decision indeed.

imageThe Boom Foundation also has Registry Quality coins for sale

That's not quite what I was saying. You need to have permission first. What if I started selling bags of coins on Ebay and said I was affliated with Boom Foundation, but instead of giving the money to a charity that you approved of, I gave it to the Church of Satan.

      See the problem.

Okay, to say the least; this entire transaction has me confused. Anyone that would volunteer their own time - THEIR OWN TIME, to conduct a charity on this board, I certainly hope wouldn't be attacked in such a way as this! I would also think that it would take more than a personality that is perhaps perceived to be harsh to totally discredit a person. So, I suspect that there are some personal issues, or previous transactions gone bad at work here that I am unaware of. For example, I have seen other auctions/charities -Airplanenut's auction which I am participating in comes to mind - conducted here without such an attack. As I have already donated to this charity; could someone please enlighten me as to why I should not have? Maybe I am still too new on these boards to see the personal problem several of you have with Boom. So far, all I have seen is several flaming posts with little substance other than anger over Boom's harsh replies. IMO, if anyone else was attacked here like Boom was; I seriously doubt that it would be met in a perfect, tactful manner. Maybe by some, but not by all.

This is not meant to stir up *&^$^$$#, I'm just trying to understand how a person comes here to attempt to do a good thing, and gets stomped on by several members. Did I miss something?

      I'll start:

      1. new ebay ID
      2. new to the forum
      3. only 'contribution' here is to spam his charity
      4. solicits coins for his charity
      5. then solicits bids for his charity
      6. name drops worse than KDimage
      7. claims dubious affiliations
      8. lashes out with name calling
      9. after fees and 'costs' very little is going to a 'charity'
      10. it smells to me

Massscrew, how do you feel about your name being thrown about for his cause. I for one like to give in private.

I personally do not mind. But, your point is well taken. Although I agree with some of the points here; I also do not smell a scam. Maybe I am not as paranoid as I should be, or I have not been taken for enough rides image, time will tell. As was said earlier, $25.00 and a few donated coins is not a very expensive education, at least not to me. I am also not attempting to change anyone's mind; I just wanted to understand.

image I am not new to ebay ..see my feedback! I am not new to these boards and have made many contributions to spark debate amongst educated Numismatists. If you were taken advantage of in the past by others, how dare you stereotype me when I have laid everything right out in the open !There is nothing to hide and I find eveyone's conduct towards me insulting and appalling! There is no name dropping-the truth is that I have asked for help... asked for people to step forward and get involved with this which I repeatedly call "Our Charity." To whom I donate the funds will be made as public as everything else as I repeat IT IS NOT MY CHARITY! I took it upon myself to initiate this in the Names of Caring Numismatists at Christmas-NOT Boom's charity- I do not want ANY recognition! When I hand the proceeds out to those that need it most, it will be as stated in the text..."From the Numismatic Community at large",including all my fellow ANA members and all the fine people with whom I am associated at PCGS!" YOU...not from me! Everything is laid out and when it's over and done with, the recipients' Names will be made public just as everything else has! If you choose to do absolutely NOTHING you will still be credited because you are a member of PCGS and or the ANA- Even if I did it all myself-I would STILL say it came from you! I do not need to pilfer a few measely dollars and find all your conduct appalling and downright shameful, If you don't want to participate...FINE-but you do not have to insult and berate me because you know nothing of me. For "upper-crust" people you all sure don't behave like it. Now kindly leave me alone and find something else to talk about! For people that have so much to be grateful for- to take a genuinely unselfish ,kind act and twist it into something sordid is beyond all comprehension! You all remind me of a lynch mob-a bunch of people quick to pass judgement on someone that has been and will continue to be, nothing but straightforward from day one! How very shameful indeed! I have NOTHING more to say!

Wow.. I just stopped by here, saw "charity" and felt good and motivated.. then I read past the title....

I'm sorry, Boom, I can't help you. First, I don't know you, but that in itself is not a deterrent. The fact that you won't let me know you is discouraging. I can take a lot of attitude, but in this thread it seems quite unwarranted. If you can't display the competence to control your own thread, to keep it on track and disprove false allegations against you without giving rise to new ones.. why on earth should I trust you to have the competence to manage a charitible foundation, to have the fiscal responsibility that comes with that??

I don't see why PCGS allows this on their servers. IF they are endorsing you they need to make it apparent before legal questions cause problems.

One thing for sure..YOU WILL GET YOUR MONEY'S WORTH! The proceeds derived from the sale of these bags will be given to Charity in the names of the Numismatic community at large(YOU) ..THE BUYERS, our fellow ANA members and all the fine folks with whom we are affiliated at PCGS!

I think if I were ANA or PCGS I'd be concerned about my advertised endorsement of the Boom Foundation.

I don't think the Boom Foundation is a fraud (though he may have a daugther named Charity) , it's lameness does seem to have a PR problem here and other places (See the Boom Foundation's Registry Spam)

So Boom, if it's true that I'll "Get My Money's Worth" and I send you $30 and receive $25 worth of coins that doesn't leave much to Charity.

So just what is the breakdown of my $30 donation to Charity?

Where does the money go, Boom? What percentage of my donation goes to Charity?

I also had the same concerns many have expressed here when I first saw Booms post.....I fact I called him a few choice names that were not appropriate. Since then I have had a couple of "chats" with the guy, and I have to say that I think he is on the up and up, and trying to do something worthwhile....I cant imagine that anyone TRYING to perfect a scam would respond to questions as he does......All that said...

Ye Gods Boom, this is no way to convince people of your commitment to what you are trying to do. PLease, before you respond to another question, THINK about what it is you are trying to accomplish, and the forum in which you are trying to accomplish it.....You have to expect that people will have questions......

<< <i>So Boom, if it's true that I'll "Get My Money's Worth" and I send you $30 and receive $25 worth of coins that doesn't leave much to Charity. >>

The gist of it is this: We, or Whomever (I have), has donated coins to Boom has done their part in this charity. Boom, takes these donated coins, puts them in bags and posts them for sale on Ebay. If anyone chooses to participate, the choice is yours to donate coins, or to purchase a $25.00 bag of coins from Ebay, or both. Boom, has already stated several times that most of the coins so far came from his personal collection. The only thing not given toward the charity is PayPal fees.

<< <i>I'm sorry, Boom, I can't help you. First, I don't know you, but that in itself is not a deterrent. The fact that you won't let me know you is discouraging. I can take a lot of attitude, but in this thread it seems quite unwarranted. >>

Actually, Boom identified himself at the very beginning of this charity to include name and address to which I sent coins, and he received them. As far as Boom's attitude being unwarranted; Boom has been getting attacked for weeks. How would you respond? Where all this went wrong I have no idea. But, this has obviously gone to far with all the suspicion and paranoia that it will most likely, and unfortunately fail. Too bad, and I digress. I feel good with my donation, and I guess that's what matters. Bash on......

So you are saying that the Boom Foundation is operating using the same guidelines as Airplanenut's charity auction.

The 16-year-old has raised over $2000 (split for 2 charities he has identified).

The Boom Foundation with 43 years of collecting experience rased $150 (destined for parts unknown) and has been repeatedily attacked.

It would seem them that the Boom Foundation needs a better PR agent, with a clear message.

I was merely using that particular current auction as an example. It's never been attacked, and that's great. I am glad that it is so successful. I wasn't asking why that particular auction was not being attacked, but why is Boom's charity being attacked? That is what I was asking. I have yet to receive an answer other than Boom is new to the forum and Ebay.

What's your IRS charitable orginazation number?

I was unaware you needed a # to do something for a charitable cause. It comes from the heart and I applaude you...BOOM. If this were based on a macro-charitable concern, I could see the vacuum(IRS) needing to get their moldy paws on some of the action; however, I recognize this particular charity drive as being on the micro level; therefore, not in need of a IRS #. Now, if you want to contribute, do as such, if you don't...DON'T. Around this time of year, the fellowship for which I'm affiliated(a non-profit orginization) gathers monies, sends a group of kind, hard-working folk, to seek toys from the dept. stores throughout the area. I/We've NEVER had to obtain a IRS authorization to do a KIND HEARTED deed for the unfortunate(children)...image

Relayer -- please don't take my words out of context. I was merely trying to warn a Board member about possible legal problems he might have in regards to using the ANA and PCGS name in his attempts to solicit charitable contributions/bids. I did not mean to insinuate the Boom is at all connected to the Church of Satan.

While I have no knowledge of who he is collecting for, he seems to be a decent fellow, trying to help someone, we just don't know who. My example was to illustrate that ANA and/or PCGS might not want their names connected to this drive.

Thank you for the clarification, massscrew.. I haven't been around this side long enough to know the history. I'll take it that Boom's charity is legit, albeit poorly managed.

Boom, sorry for the doubt. My advice for you, sincerely: find a more suitable environment. That or adjust the campaign plan. Apparently this place isn't working out too well at the current pitch. Maybe relocate to another forum, conduct business here via PM, or take the time to patiently explain your cause as many times as needed (I'd recommend a brief summary in your sig line). Whatever you do, arguing openly doesn't seem to be very productive. Try cultivating more pleased clients like massscrew and your job won't be so hard.

Who cares if it is legit or not and the legalities involved? Some of you guys simply miss the point.

        He calls us a:
        <<<Kangaroo Court
        FOOL
        jack ass
        fool
        "upper-crust"
        a lynch mob->>>
        Tells us to:
        <<<-Shut up->>>
        Finds us:
        <<<insulting and appalling!
        and downright shameful>>>

I'm sure he's really a great guy. He just has a way with words to warm our hearts.
This thread is the first time I've heard of Boom's charity auction.
        I'm not impressed.
When Darktone asked if it was legit a simple "yes" would have been fine.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

image I never dreamed that a simple good deed could turn into such a terrible ordeal! I'll be glad when all is said and done. I'm afraid for the very first time in my life, that I've been beaten down. Some of you know how this all began-obviously many do not! It all began years ago simply wanting to do something nice, anonymously, for people less fortunate-old timers that no longer had family or friends-the same old timers that were once young war heroes that sacrificed themselves for our freedom,or for children that didn't know who their dad's were because they weren't men at all-they deserted their kids and MOMA was now forced to drag the street to do the best she could to support her kids and somewhere along the way- managed to become a crack head....wanting to let these people know that out there SOMEBODY cared. Giving a simple little gift to brighten up a kid's eyes or to see the old tymer's eye well up when you smiled at him and gave him a meal and a warm coat! How are you supposed to Name a Charity such as this. It doesn't exist -but every Christmas it did-for me! That, to me is what Christmas is about. This is what I sought to include all of you in,whether you gave or not, I never had a computer before 8-8-03-I never wanted one! Long about now I wish I didn't own this one. This is why you all see me as a newcomer yet I collected coins all my life!Tax ID-what? Organization-What? I don't want anything, I repeat hopefully for the last time-not even recognition-instead I've been grilled and insulted. I think I might just fold it up and turn the coins-the orders and the donations to someone and let them finish! I've had enough! Respectfully, Warren C. Segura-Boom
