LuckOfTheIrish. The die cracks are kind of cool on the SACs. ANACS may designate them as a "SpikedHead" variety if there is enough demand. I remember the did that for the so-called "Wounded Eagle" SACs back in 2000.
Speaking of Die Cracks though. Back in 2000, when I bought my proof sets, I bought 100 sets thinking they would take off like the 1999 sets did. After searching them, all but like 5 or 6 sets had this neat die crack. Look at the picture or attachment. Both are the same. I still have them all because I did not want to take a loss on the sets, but anyway......how do you like?

I highly doubt my quarter will be worth $100,000.00 some day. Heck, I have tons of them setting here. If they were each worth that much then I could retire.
Are you interested in buying some? Since I don't think they are worth $100,000.00, I will offer them, to you for $2,000.00 each. You can make a nice profit on them if you sell them at 100K per coin.

Why not post a message on the Q and A board and ask David Hall? I would be interested in knowing the answer to that question. I know there are many unique examples of some coins, but how do they handle that? I don't know.
I gotta start looking through more proof sets! I wonder if there's an Eisenhower with a spiked head. Now that would be awesome, or maybe even a Franklin. I can see these things REALLY taking off!

I had a question for you. You seem to know allot about the proof die cracks.
What would one of the quarters I have bring in PCGS PF69DCAM? I had sent in the best looking set I had and had all the coins graded. The quarters all graded 69DCAM as well as the dollar, nickel, and half. The dime and cent came back 68DCAM.
Anyway, I have that coin and it is a beauty! Any idea as to value?

Proof 69's I've seen bids in the $30.00 range on ebay. For the error I have seen $285.00 also on ebay with many bids. Who knows the true value? Books don't even mention them.
Marty -- I love Ikes. That is amazing. I've never seen a SpikeHead Eisenhower. That HAS to be ONE of a kind. Now with all the interest in Ikes -- the types I,II & III bringing such huge money that coin is going to be worth astronomical moon money.
I have a 78 Washington Proof Quarter to match. I gotta have that coin. What do you call it -- The "Blinking Eisenhower"

Wow! That's amazing, it is almost in the exact same place, except on the obverse as my "Wounded Eagle" 1978 Washington Quarter. What a great matching pair. I wonder if I can find the Lincoln, Jeff and Roosie to complete the set.
Imagine that a complete 1978 proof set with spikeheads!
If you notice you can't see where any little chips are breaking away from the crack after each strike. Some cracks look cameo due to the chipping away of the die after each progressive strike.
You can't hardly see them Frattlaw. Think how hard the die must be. It is very brittle, and not maleable like gold is. The crack starts in time due to the constant pounding it takes. Where the crack is, a new edge is formed along the crack. The edge is very brittle because nothing supports it anymore, and little microscopic pieces keep breaking away after each strike. The metal from the coin flows into these new chip voids making it look frosted. Marty's coin doesn't have that appearance. It could also mean that not very many coins exist because of it.

LUCKOFTHEIRISH may not know who it is since you just joined. But, those of use who have been around know exactly who it is.
PCGS will designate only die cracks under their Error Coin service which is $30.00 per coin.
They will not designate "Spiked Head" variety, etc.

David Hall of PCGS said there is not enopugh demand for "naming coins", plus it would make a mess out of the pop reports.
The truth is is that it is a die crack and nothing more. Though I will admit that it is in an interesting location, it is still just a die crack.
ANACS will do it if you submit enough of the coins to them. I have seen many 2000 SACs designated as the wounded eagle. So, who knows.
Why call it a spiked head? Why not an "impaled head", or something more interesting than a spike? Maybe "Bow-N-Arrow Sac"?

When I bought these, the person wanted 5% above bid. But he kept saying how they were sure to take off like the 1999 sets and how everyone wants them.
I finally gave in and bought them. Never even knew I had something that special.
