Ronald Reagan on the US dime?

Here's an amusing story I heard today on the news, about Ronald Reagan from his supporters:

WASHINGTON - Conservative Republicans angry over an unflattering television movie about Ronald Reagan (news - web sites) want to put his image on the dime in place of Democratic icon Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Democrats are just as determined to keep FDR's profile in coin purses.

What do you guys think???

Forget the dime, Ronald Reagan should be on Mount Rushmore!

Why not put presidents on coins chronologically.
    penny: Reagan
    nickel: Kennedy
    dime: FDR
    quarter: Lincoln
    half: Jefferson
    dollar : Washington

That would be too logical, I suppose.
Money seems to evoke a lot of emotion.
Besides, the design submissions, re-tooling by the Mint,
and current political party's influence would make the change
    a nightmare !

Still, it would be fun to see the next president doing his damndest
to get his portrait on the penny !

i wonder if George W. will be on coin a someday.

what if clinton makes it on one of our coins.
that would be a half cent huh.image

probably be in a cashless society before those two make it on a coin.

I guess that would be determined by what your definition of 20cents is? As much as I admire Ronald Reagan, and worked locally in 2 of his campaigns, please, no more presidents on coinage...period. Let's return to symbols of our country, ie. Liberty, rather than political figures. Just my 2 cents worth...hey, they could put Reagan on the 2 cent piece...he was the great communicator, wasn't he?

I saw a news program last night that mentioned the idea of Reagan on the dime. When asked Nancy Reagan said "no", she didn't like the idea. They didn't say why she was opposed.

As for Clinton I think he missed his coin, the 1883 N/C nickel, AKA the Raketeer Nickel. image

20c. 1/5 of a dollar......you mean how it relates to goods and services?
good question. but what is a one cent coin.......tax and charity moneys really.

like the dollar coin only working if they took the paper one out.
a 20c wouldnt work unless they scratched the 25c. and that aint gonna happen in our lifetimes.

ok forget the 20c coin. lets put Reagan on the 75c coin
and we,ll scratch the half dollar altogether. image

about Reagan getting on a coin, first, he not electroensepholiographicly challenged (dead). yet.
and even though the country mostly votes conservatively, the media and Hollywood could raise
enough stink over it to make it look like EVERYONE is TOTALLY against THAT idea.
they have, for many years, gone out of their way to trash Republicans and conservatism.
ok , now i,m sounding like Rush.

edited to add. See. They even have Nancy looking like its not a good idea.
I,ll bet her comments were taken out of context.

FDR deserves to be on the Dime for obvious reasons... end of discussion. Frankly, if the Republicans had any class, there would be Teddy Roosevelt coin by now or T. Roosevelt should replace Grant with on the $50 bill.

Reagan can be on a coin at some future date.

Agreed Cosmic... I stand to be corrected but FDR was President at the time a 1936 peso was issued for the Philippines. I also think that Coolidge was President at the time the Sesqui half was issued in 1926.

FDR Should stay on the Dime.

I don't think that any design should remain unchanged after 25, 40 or 50 years. Times change but money remains the same (except to lower relief to increase minting efficiency). In a dynamic society, it is only right that each generation defines themselve through their circulating coinage. Do you not view our coins as art or sculpture and an expression of our great country? Would you collect coins if the designs had never changed since the mint first opened? Why not eliminate the date, the motto, faces and symbols and just have one side say "United states of America" in big block letters and the denomination on the other? Atleast with the british commenwealth countries, the face changes with some consistency as monarchs age and die.

And one other thing. Congress should not be permitted to control the images on money to be used as their own political propaganda.

Nancy's comments were not taken out of context. She said "I don't believe it would be right to remove the image of a great President from the dime just to replace him with another President."

I agree with Conder and will go a little farther--I don't believe any of our recent Presidents deserve to be commemorated on circulating coinage. If the die hard supporters of Reagan, Bush, Clinton and others want to buy a commemorative half or dollar--great!! But there are too many who would find their portraits on circulating coinage a bit much--especially "W"--unless we bring back the counterfeit "V" nickle. Much more than its actual value. Reagan is a nice man but so are most of our grandfathers.

IMO 87% of American presidents, living and dead, were/are just a bunch of political hacks, opportunists, thieves, charlatans, chronic liars and certainly bums undeserving of their portraits on anything except perhaps a Halloween candy sucker.

But, if people who insist on polluting numismatics with politics feel that this pollution is so important, then put the portraits of dead presidents on commeratives. As for living presidents - putting ANY live president's portraits on coinage is an abomination. Let them go to some country and run for king or prince, and then they can have their ugly mugs on coins - or become dictators like Saddam.

The evolution of once great and beautiful American coinage into political hackery and Hollywood theatrics demeans our wonderful country and our lost great numismatic tradition.

    Thank you for your attention.

Now putting some nice feline pictures on coins - that is a toatally different matter. image

    Leper colony coinage? j/k image

Guess its obvious I'm a darksider by saying this:
NO MORE REAL PEOPLE ON COINS!!!!

That's what books are for. If you want to educate the public, whatever, do it in schools. Our money is practical, but it's images should be symbolic. A good image can convey a lot.. one person's image is really shortening the spectrum.
