Newbie wants you to rate his start
I am just getting into collecting again (Idid it as a kid with my dad), and here is some of what I have picked up. Please tell me what you think.
1972-s .25 PR69CAM
1940-d .01 MS67 RD
1957 .10 MS66
1954-s .10 MS66
1944-d .10 MS63FB
1941-d .10 MS64FB
1945-s .10 MS67 Toned
I would love to start collecting Morgans but the damn things can get expensive. I currently own a baseball card store but would some day like to add coins when I become more knowledgable.

Give it a break with the sample mess.
You got a good start. But just curious, who's grades are those? Are they certified? Or are they raw coins? I can't stress how important it is to get some good reference books before you make too many pruchases. I learned the hard way, as many of us had made some big mistakes when we were first starting out. Coin shows are a lot of fun, and ask a lot of questions! It's a fun hobby!

One way you can start this is to do a "date set"...that is get one from each year they were made. That way you can pick up some really nice Morgans relatively inexpensively ( the 1893-95 ones will be the toughest).
Dansco makes a date set album if you buy them raw...but get an ANA grading book...and don't buy from the big multi page ad mail order coin dealers you might see in some coin pubs.
Welcome

Now listen boy, I'm tryin' to teach you sumthin' . . . . that ain't an optical illusion, it only looks like an optical illusion.

<< <i>If you're only gonna buy one inexpensive book as you get started, I would suggest Travers' "The Coin Collector's Survival Manual."

Talk about something that is selling! I don't live close to a bookstore the closest one is over two hours from my home. So I've been looking for it on line like Barnes & Nobles, Amazon. Both places will not have it until after Christmas...Wow!
Are you going the direction you want to? Are you learning about coins as you go?
Are you paying higher than market values?
Some of these may be difficult questions for you right now but as time goes on the
answers will become more clear.
Buying books is always a good idea. There is a new book out on the Roosies and
the others shouldn't be hard to find. Keep it slow until you gain some confidence and
just keep plugging away.

The Survival Guide is good, and add the ANA grading book.
Live Long and Prospect.
Now, some advice:
-Many have already suggested buying books: sage advice- in the long run paying for knowledge now will save money and pain in the future.
-Many on the boards do not buy at PCGS price guide prices, they are a little high. Heritagecoin.com, a large scale auction outfit, has its own price guide based on past auction prices, you should check it out.
-If you want in bigtime, use the price guides that the pros use - CDN Greysheet and Bluesheet - being a baseball card dealer, I am sure that you know how to use them properly
-Look at many coins in different series to decide what you would like your collection to be and how much you can afford. Many people like sets of coins, however a set can be defined anyway that you want. (I am working on a short set (1934-1945PDS) Mercury dimes in PCGS MS66FB and raw (unslabbed) uncirculated and proof Jefferson nickels)
-Buy only attractive, undamaged, unmessed with coins, at least until you know what you are doing and can adjust your buy price accordingly
-Not all grading companies are equal, one company's MS66 is another's MS64 and overpaying for coins is the worst feeling (IMO) a collector can have
-Don't expect to get rich on coins. If you buy attractive, properly graded coins at current market prices as a collector, sometime in the future you might break even. Your chances improve with dedicated study and exposure to coins and experienced collectors/honest dealers.
Welcome. I hope that you find much enjoyment from the hobby, and don't let the sour pusses on the board ever get you down
You are doing well, subject 15837. You are a good person.
