Can dipping a coin create a PL or DMPL appearance?

Does anyone know if professional dipping can strip away a coin's surface in such a way that a proof like appearance results? If so, is it possible that some PL and DMPL Morgans out there were enhanced in this manner?

not unless it was already there.

Dipping or cleaning will give the entire coin a shiney look, but this is very different from a true PL or DMPL which will have a reflective, mirror-like surface, usually only in the fields (although some dates can be found with reflective devices as well).

    Definitely not.

    Dan,

My experience has been just the opposite. Dipping a coin deteriorates any mirror finish.

I guess you can't be faulted for asking. All the talk of dipping for upgrades and "Fixing" coins on here, and "Send it to NCS they are professionals and they can fix most anything. And all the talk of "Making coins" on here no wonder someone might think they can make a DMPL.image

Create, no; reveal, possibly. You need contrast and reflectivity for PL and DMPL designations, neither of which is imparted by dipping.

Many PL's recently graded by NGC have indeed been through their conservation service. They are in no way true original PL's but are now so blasty they can get away with it. There is no comparison however to the real thing.

Dipping can NEVER "enhance" a PL surface. On a coin that is toned, dipping can "expose" the PL surfaces that may hve been "masked' by the toning, but it cannot create nor enhance the PL surfaces. BUT overdipping can destroy the delicate PL surfaces and turn a beautiful coin into an fugly coin. image

Not with my recent experience and I fill rippedimage

Had an 80-O that had heavy toning and PCGS BBed for questionable toning a couple of years ago. Then it looked like it could be PL but the toning was masking it. Thought I would try out the dipping process for the first time by sending it to NCS. Came back white and shiny of course but with defnitely PL surfaces but no PL designated on the slab by NGCimage
Maybe NGC is gunshy now on conserved morgans getting the PL??
