Most of the overlooked series, ie large cents, barber dimes, quarters, halves, and peace dollars.

Sample slabs (you get them for free). In a few years, they are old holders and scarce.

I still think BN and RB Proof Indian Cents with beautiful vibrant color are a good deal, if you can find them. That being said, prices have gone up dramatically for certified pieces in high grades( PR65 to 67 ). Your best bet is to try to buy them raw at shows, if you are confident in your grading ability and your ability to spot recolored coins. I used to be able to pick up 5 to 10 nice ones at large shows as recently as a few years ago but they are getting harder and harder to find nice and original, and the prices have certainly gone up.
Also, a large cent date set from 1840 to 1857 in nice choice RB Unc. would be a great thing to put away. You can still find nice late date large cents in RB if you are persistent, and you will not have to pay the enormous premiums for full Red coins, which are often spotted and not all that attractive anyway. The stoppers in this set will be the 1841 and 1844.
A matte proof collection of Buffalo Nickels would also be a great thing to put together. Its only eight coins if you include the 1913 Type I and II, and the Satin and Brilliant 1936 issues, and proof Buffalo Nickels are beautiful coins.

The series, itself, will probably have little to do with it. Factors that are apt to make more of a difference, include :

Market timing of purchase...
Price paid, relative to current fair market value at that time...
Selection of coin based upon quality and appeal, not just the numerical grade that someone assigns to it...
Storage and preservation...
Future market price movements...
Market timing of sale..
Price realized, relative to current fair market value at that time...

I'll go with the key dates in higher grades. Own fewer, but better quality key date coins.

pre 1835 capped bust silver coinage in really choice to gem mintstate with a totally deep glazed original skin that is multicolored and especially the holy grail of underapprecaition and sleeper series the half dimes from 1829 to 1834!!!!

monster looking lustre and blast gem/superb gem mintstate late 1870's to 1880's type three one dollar gold and even better if late date 1870's with that coppery orange red coloring wow the ultimate! sometimes at the mint well really on rare occasions there were improper alloy mixtures causing the coins to have a soft blue/lavender coloring to them besides the orange/red color you maybe see two a year like this if you go to every show and look at handreds of gold dollars ont many understand or hav e seen this yet know about it a coin like this would be the ultimate holy grail if it has great lustre wow wild!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't buy for profit potential.

The greatest profits are likely to go to collectors who bother to learn about whatever
they are collecting. They will go to the collectors who put the most time and effort into
trying to complete their sets. Those who are in uncharted areas that have never been
widely collected will sometimes have one leg up on others. There are no free lunches and
no sure things. Try to have fun and do your homework and you'll at least do OK financially.

if all the coins as per my two above posts are bought within reason by a specialist who knows value and understands what they are looking at and collected as such with discretionary income i think not only will you have fun but at worst case scenerio you will break even
