Who collects raw jefferson nickels?

This is an area I'm starting to take up now. I'm finding some great coins at really good prices (almost all <$2/ea). What are some great sources, other than shows, for these? I'm thinking mainly of the 1938-1980 era. Meaning, really, just looking for some ideas of where to look. I occassionally pick up rolls from the bank and so far I've got 80% of a 1938-1995 business strike collection that way. But obviously not all are BU.

I've got a whole pocketful right now. I never considered it a collection, though. I guess it's all perspective

Some of my Jefferson collection came out of pocket change and most of the rest from shows.

It's not a collection until you keep it, study it, organize it, and preserve it.

That is what makes collecting coins so great...different people collect different coins for different reasons.

I pulled nearly the entire series out of change (the 1939-D is the only one I never found). Jefferson's are a real fun series to collect, and many can be easily found by searching for them.

You can find the later date BU rolls quite cheaply. Many of these rolls will contain a nice
looking example or two though gems are improbable. After you spend the rest of the roll
the net cost can still be quite low. Many of the mint sets are also pretty cheap, though the
effort to sell the remainders will be greater. Gems are much easier in the sets. For the old-
er Jeffersons you'll probably need to look in the dealers books at coin shows or in shops.
Most dealers keep the less expensive coins in 2X2 pages assembled into binders. These
usually sell for trends or around retail prices and often contain nicer coins.

I am putting together a raw set of uncirculated and proof Jeffersons. For these coins, more than other modern series, it is imperative to look at the individual coins prior to purchase, especially if you are looking for nickels with any quality to the steps. Mail order, while inexpensive, does not net very nice looking raw nickels. As far as circulated coins, early date rolls on ebay, and ebay for silver nickels are also a good bet. But I feel that the set is inexpensive enough, why not just go uncirculated and have a nice, complete matched set?

I'm putting together a VG-BU set from change and an occasional coin store >$1 purchase--I'm just using a Littleton Album (one-sided coin board type) but may upgrade to a two-sided album. I like the contrast between the well worn and MS coins on the same page, and in some cases, side by side.

nice coins. The 40-d usually comes well struck. The 38-s looks nice...can't tell for the scan if it is FS...probably not but it is very nice. BTW, the 54-s is very difficult with Full Steps.

hey Neil

while i collect Jeffersons slabbed MS66FS i'm also putting together a raw Uncirculated set in an Intercept Shield album with color being the primary consideration as opposed to strike. as such, i need to see them so i focus on buying at shows, auctions, shops and other collectors. some dates are easy with beautful color plentiful and other dates i haven't seen anything yet worth buying. prices average between 25 cents and $2 with only a few dates costing more.

I don't think any of those in the album are FS... some are notably stronger than others, though, with the 54-s taking the cake for best color... and worst strike

I'll probably get more (better) images over the long weekend.

I get a lot of my Jeffersons from my local coin dealer. They are nearly all BU (although I am now a proud owner of several slabbed AU-58's). My best find was a full step 1938 P and D which both graded MS-66FS at PCGS. They cost me less than $2 each! I also have a raw collection of my almost Full steps in an intercept shield album.
