MULTI-COIN HOLDER TAKEN A STEP FURTHER. GOOD IDEA PCGS!
I noticed an ad on the www.tulving.com site today under their "specials":
"THE NEWEST, COOLEST INNOVATION FROM PCGS!!!
A ONE PIECE PCGS HOLDER FOR THE 4 COIN PROOF GOLD AMERICAN EAGLE SET THAT FITS NICELY INSIDE THE ORIGINAL U.S. MINT GOLD PROOF SET BOX!!! TAKE A LOOK AT THIS STUNNING SET AND OTHER PICS: ....
WE HAVE THE 4 COIN SET, GRADED BY PCGS AS PR69DCAM, AND WE
WILL INCLUDE THE ORIGINAL MINT BOX, WITH COA ( Certificate of Authenticity) WITH EACH SET ORDERED!!! "
*************
What PCGS has done here is create a 4 coin multi-holder which actually fits in the original govt. packaging. That is very clever.
I also wonder if it might become easier to sell slabbed coins to retirement accounts, etc. where the coins actually come in the original govt. packaging like this? At one point I was under the impression that only the original govt. packaged coins were available in some of these accounts, but, I have not been closely following the rules. Does anyone know the current rules on placing these gold and platinum coins in retirement accounts?
Anyone, very clever idea PCGS to develop a holder which fits into the original packaging

It's a good idea, and PCGS has refined it a bit more. I like it.
We'll use our hands and hearts and if we must we'll use our heads.
i still like it and think it's clever and attractive.

Boy it's going to be a pain in the @$$ tapping that thing around to get all the coins straight!
I wonder how having one cert number for four coins would work in the Registry?

Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
It's a step in the right direction.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
That must be a sample slab! Note it does not have the PCGS logo in the plastic.

Nope. It has a grade and PCGS uses MS00 on their sample slabs. The labels usually say "sample" also. That would be one expensive sample slab.

Check out a Vanguard Roth IRA.

Good defensive marketing move here.
Relayer's question is a good one........

Curious to the answer.
be a pain in the @$$ to kee the coins all in one direction. AND, if 1 or 2 spotted or toned or something causing possibly a different grade or something, then what? And the point of registry with 5 coins and 1 number...that would be tough too.
Great idea in theory, but as of now, I still like the single holder, personally.

<< <i>Anyone out there know if the "slabs in original packaging" are acceptable for retirement accounts?

My understanding is that you can put GAEs and SAEs and platinum US coins into IRAs as long as a custodian has physical possesion. I don't think the packaging matters at all, or ever did.

Perhaps someone on the boards who actually has coins in a retirement account can comment.

The more growth the better the realized benefits. Place your bets however you see fit but bullion is not my first choice for monster appreciation in the long term. Thus it has no place in my IRA.
As far as having the original holders and all that, it doesn't really matter because you can't just buy it yourself or use coins you already own. IRS regulations state that you have to use an approved custodian which buys, sells and acts as a depository on your behalf. Basically it's all on paper, which kind of goes against the whole idea of bullion ownership anyway.

Since rare coins are not allowed in IRA's as of yet, I would assume the latter but it's just speculation on my part. I am guessing that you couldn't add PCGS graded bullion if you wanted to, and if you could then it would be treated solely on bullion value anyway.
What I thought as well, which is why I believed PCGS graded gold or platinum Eagles were not permitted in retirement accounts, but, bullion (raw) coins were allowed. Which brings up my original question of whether PCGS graded proof gold eagle bullion coins in the "non-rare" grade of PR69 (like those pictured here) which go back into the original packaging would be acceptable for retirement accounts? We may never know

<< <i>All coins with one grade seems odd. What are the chances if each coin was separately submitted that they would they all come back that same one grade? or maybe its an overall net grade for the whole bunch together instead of individually? >>
For modern proofs, it's probably not all that unusual. From what I hear, the vast majority grade 69DCAM.

How about a multi coin holder for aset of REAL gold coins ?
Let's say an 1898 gold proof set with different grades !

Sorta like... sorta like... the US Mint already does.
There might be some interest.
<< <i>How about an entire set like roosies or memorials? >>
It's the next logical step. An entire slabbed album. 'Twould be interesting...
