A giraffe, a skunk and a doe are sitting in a bar, swigging down one drink after another.
After a couple hours the waitress arrives with the bar tab.
The doe looks at the other two and says, "I haven't had a buck in weeks"
The skunk says, "don't look at me, I haven't got a (s)cent"
So the giraffe says, "looks like the highballs are on me!"

Not "exactly" sure myself, but I do know it's a mixed drink with whiskey in it. My grandfather used to drink 'em all the time, and I still have the highball glasses.
A: Beer nuts are $1.25, deer nuts are under a buck.
With regards to the giraffe, it refers to his nuts being high off the ground. I'll let others answer the drinking aspect of a highball.

Everybody knows that "highballs" are "big balls" or “biguns” or as amateurs say, "stripes," which are numbered 9-15 vs. "lowballs" or "little balls" or as amateurs say, "solids," which are numbered 1-7.
