jonesy, it's one thing to say you don't like the color on a coin. It's another, to comment as you did. Unless you know something about the coin and / or the seller that the rest of us do not, I think you were both incorrect and unfair.

I know the seller from coin shows and conventions. He spends a lot of time searching the bourse and auctions to find nice color coins.

yes tonecoin2003 sells AT coins. Greattoning does not. A new person to the boards might not know greattoning and think he was called a doctor when he is not.

BTW greattoning is auctioning off some of my coins this week and that is one of the reasons I am sticking up for his reputation.

I'll stick up for Mr d, also. If you follow his auctions, when he sells a coin that has striking colors, he even adds comments like "I don't make em, I just sell em." Almost all of his sales are consignments.

Using the Tonecoin 2003 simile is just plain wrong.

I think the coin looks natural myself, but opinions should be objective and based on the coin. Coin commentary on this board is usually based on the seller and not the coin.

If you look at the same exact auction - but replace "Greattoning" with "Tonecoin3000", I gaurantee the commentary on this board concerning the coin would be as different as night and day.

baccaruda, while he expressed an opinion, as stated, it went to the seller, and not just the coin - that is the part that I had a problem with.

It's one thing to say "that coin looks cooked", but, it's something very different to say "Good Cooker of coins". The former refers to the coin and the latter refers to the coin, as well as the actions of the seller.

Considering that Dick deals primarily in certified PCGS and NGC coins and buys them in their holders, comments about his "cooking" them seem unwarranted. And, as mentioned by JBSteven, someone could easily get the wrong impression from such an "opinion".

Edited to add: I see that Jonesy was much more polite and fair minded in a subsequent post.

That's true, he did call him a "cooker" I guess. If he said it was "cooked" it would have been alright.

baccaruda, yes, big difference between offering what some think to be a certified "cooked" coin, as opposed to being referred to as a "cooker".

On the other hand, if you are talking about dinner, I'd prefer to be a "cooker" to being "cooked".

That one letter difference in the two words can have a BIG impact, here and at home!

I have seen this coin in person and it looks allright to me. All of Dicks coins are in holders and most are consigned to him. A lot of them from members of these boards. I have attended shows with him and he is all over the place making a pest of himself till he gets what he wants. He pays good money for the coins he buys and sells what he buys. He is very fair in his dealings with all and is , I find , to be very honest. I enjoy all my dealings with him and for those that do not , that is their loss.

Gentlemen,

Based on what many reputable board members have stated, I have little doubt concerning the ethics of this seller. Besides, the coin has been certified.

However, based on the photo, the coin does give the impression of being artificially toned. I've seen several threads showing coins pictured by this same seller and then by the current or previous owner and in each case the different images gave two completely different impressions.

Personally, I wouldn't want to bid on a coin that was photographed under the most flattering conditions. It only sets me up for disappointment.

I hope nobody hates me for stating my opinion.
