Wash 25C Pros - Your Thoughts here please

Does that look like a D Mint mark on the obverse to anyone else besides me? To the right of date at about 2 o'clock?

image

I can pick it out under magnification also. Just noticed it tonight after shooting pics for my 1962 Mint Year set. Can any Wash Pros shed some light/thoughts on this? Thanks, Dave

Strange...Do you have any closer photos? Does it "look like" a mintmark up close?

Probably built up in the mint mark and then flipped on top of the planchet.

    Seems pretty improbable though.

Really strange to me. It is not visible to my bare, tired old eyes but with a 15X glass at an angle, you can see it pretty clear. I'll have to see if I can get any closer with my Fuji tomorrow.

I'm not a real Wash collector, just for my Birth Year sets so this is new to me. Could the Mint have been testing to move the MM from reverse to obverse in 1962? It did move after 1964 (1968 because of SMS?). Any other theories quarter folks? Dave

well, certainly looks like a D or maybe an S, but it's in the wrong place for it to be some sort of time-warp die from 1968 or later.
Possibly the die punch dude mistakenly lightly punched a mintmark into the obverse, in the wrong place, but this seems unlikely, since there would be lots and lots of these identified already.
Someone mentioned a filled die or a D laminating off the reverse of another coin, and stamped into this one, or some other object struck through that happens to look just like a well-levelled D.

An interesting coin, definitely a keeper, just hang on to it, look for more, maybe it will become a well-publicized and valuable rarity!

Thanks. I will certainly be hanging on to it and continue to search for some more info. Realizing how far away it is from the 1968 initiated mintmark position still makes me think that this might have been a test model or an actual production coin minted with an old test die? Anybody got any serious Wash. Quarter history books? My library out here in Brazil is kind of thin on the topicimage

Definitely a D. I'd send it to ANACS and get them to certify it. Theoretically it can be post mint altered but doesn't look like it.

Where did you get this coin, by the way?

It looks like it's in a PCGS holder. I would (like to) think that someone along the way would have noticed something strange like this, either PCGS or the dealers who have handled it.

This is a Wondercoin Special and sits in a special registry set! Thanks Mitch!!!!

It is in a PCGS holder and as I stated earlier, it is nearly impossible to see with the bare eye. Especially in that area where you wouldn't really expect anything. It just popped out at me when I took the photo and I can see it a little specifically looking for it. Easy to miss though.

May send it in for a professional look-see. Will let you know if it turns out to be one of those super rarities! Or run of the mill errors. Thanks, Dave

Compare the shape of the inside of the loop of the 'D", vs other D mint marks

Dave: COOL! Good luck with the neat find and please keep me posted. And, if it does turn out to be a super rare and valuable specimen, I think you would rightfully "owe me" a pitcher of Margaritas, chips and Salsa at the next show we both find ourselves at! Just another great ebay deal, which I am really glad you won. And, the funny thing is the coin came in a collection (which I posted on ebay) from a collector who does take the time to look for varieties image

Mitch: Even if this turns out to be nothing, I still owe you at the very least several pitchers of margaritas and chips for everything else you've helped me with! On the other hand if this turns out to be something, then you'll certainly be able to collect! Will let you know Amigo. Dave
