I wonder why this 1954-S Frankie didn't make a 66

Maybe the toning at the top or the spots on the coin. Anyway it's a very nice looking Frankie!

It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • from the pic I could assume that the scratches on the cheek, as you well know a prime focal area, were too obvious for a 66 grade. Sometimes those kinds of marks will jump out and poke you in the eye. The milk spots might be an eye appeal factor. I don't like Milk spots on a frankie, and would deduct a point for them. I really don't see the toning as a negative on this coin. The strike is actually not too bad for 54-S.
    What did it grade?

  • Well, screw the 66 then. I wondered if you got a FBL. Even your crappy photo looks like a fblimage
I'd be real happy with that grade.

  • I think that 65 is about right. You could possibly get 66 with a little luck.
  • Nice luster, and a pretty clean coin. From the photo there seems to be a hit dead center of the obverse. Is this really there? If so, this is why I would think it got the 66. 66FBL would have been nice image

    Marty,

I think it's the luck of the draw. Looks like a tweener, and a coin no one would object to in a 66 holder.

  • I agree with Don - it could go either way on any given day - PCGS has been brutal on Franklin grades of late so I'm not surprised that they graded this one tough!

I'll say this one will never be in a ms66 holder and it hadn't a thing to do with PCGs being tough on Franklins. I have recently made 5 ms66fbl's... PCGs isn't being any tougher then they have been.
The scratches on the cheek are too severe and this one suffers from a weak and mushy strike, keeping it in a 5 holder. Just look at Franklins face, nose mouth area... very mushy and weak. The 54s mss66fbl that I owned and 3 others that I have seen did not have this, they were sharply struck.

I agree with Lucy, as soon as I saw the coin, I am thinking Ms-65FBL at best. The marks on the obverse will limit to a 5.

Maybe because of the dings and several hairlines on the cheek and jaw. The hairlines being the main reason. imo

Marty, I think it's worth a crackout, and resubmission.
    At least once.

Lucy is probably right... however, the 54-s is poorly struck and when MS66 is contemplated, the strike really should be above average. Its still a great coin and attractive in 65 holder. I can't comment on the FBL in light of the scan.

I'm really fussy when it comes to Franklins. If this coin were in an MS-64 holder I won't buy it. The toning looks milky and there are unattrative milk spots. There are marks on the cheek. On this scan I can't tell if it has bell lines or not. Overall the eye appeal on this piece does not turn me on.

Franklin half dollars tend to come nice. It's mostly strike, marks and eye appeal that make the difference between OK, nice and WOW! "WOW!" for me is mostly reserved for cameo 1950 Proof coins, which are really scarce. For the most part the 1950 Proofs were poorly made with disappointing luster.

I agree with several of the other comments that this coin won't 66FBL. Although a nice looking coin, in terms of a 66, the eye appeal is low- toning a bit dark at the top (although probably not too dark for a 66- in my experience if there is to much dark toning, it won't 66), mulk spots (in my experience, PCGS does not like them), not sure what type of toning is on the top of the head. Further, there are a few marks, and the luster and strike is not enough to make up for the eye appeal and marks.
