Why do people feel compelled to ridicule and belittle ebay auctions?

mdwoodsmdwoods Posts: 5,560 ✭✭✭
I can understand bringing it to peoples attention if a auction is for a counterfeit coin, or a mis-attributed coin. But why point out an auction for it's description and belittle the
seller when you have no real idea of what that person is like. I see this all the time on the US Coin Forum. Almost all here know that a beautifully toned coin can look ugly and dull in a photo and yet that doesn't seem to make any difference when the pack is on the hunt.

You would need to ask a good psychologist that question. Actually, I think the banter on this board about various listings is both educational and informational to collectors, dealers and numismatists of all stages of development. I 've had some good laughs and have also glommed onto a few things that I would not have known about if somebody out there was not studying EBay listings with more intensity than I have time to do.

Cause it's fun? C'mon, everyone posts a boner auction at one or another. It's beholden on the rest to ridicule such an event.

Some are outright funny & entertaining. Others show ridiculous terms & conditions (like a $5 in store pick-up fee). I think it just comes
down to a matter of making conversation on these topics with no ill intent.

Nothing wrong with studying ebay auctions, probably most here have nabbed a choice coin or two off of ebay. And some auctions are humorous as well.
I don't mean those kind of threads. Perhaps the internet is bad in the way it can reduce people to icons, if we don't stop and think about it. Even the best
of us has a mean streak, it just seems to come out in certain threads.

The answer, of course, is that they're all working on killing their fathers and marrying their mothers, without causing too much notoriety.

Dpoole, is that really what causes it? I used to kill my father all the time.

No, it has nothing to do with me or my auctions. And no one loves to tease and be teased more than me. But at some point teasing turns into meanness. I never purposely tease anyone that I think won't understand. I'm sure I have though.

Some of it can be traced to the basest of human needs, the need to feel superior to someone or the need to make someone feel as lousy as they do. Its akin to gossip, sometimes in its worst sense. Its always going to be part of the human condition. Imagine if every member here who has spyed this kind of auction posted about it.

Sometimes I think its because they want to be heard and don't have much numismatically to offer. Having said all of this some of those auctions are downright hilarious, especially ones like the guy selling his exes beanie babies.

Hmmh, interesting! This may have SOME direct correlation with Herbert Cooley's "Looking glass self."

The ones that get me are the statements that only garbage coins are put on ebay...that no collector worth his salt would buy them...that even the slabbed coins are clearly low end for the grade, because why would they go to ebay otherwise.

The vast majority of my ebay auction buys have been pleasurable experiences. I have yet to give a negative input, and if I've ended up with a loser coin in the long run, it's been because of my own lack of knowledge and not returning the piece.

Even in a bigger city like San Diego, I'm having trouble finding the pieces I need/want at reasonable prices. My collection would be nowhere if I didn't go to ebay. What are my other options ?? The mail order rip off joints ?? Been there and done that, and have the battle scars. The Legends and Pinnacles who have top shelf stuff and quality service, but are generally beyond my reach ??

Excellent point Woodie. Nobody kicks a dead dog. I've gotten some fantastic coins off of ebay. I will say it was easier years ago though.

What you stated, does it NOT sound like some are still in the developmental stages of self, even in adulthood? Does this sound like there are those, including myself, that will boast such dialect to achieve a reaction to develop, only if momentarily, a self-concept? Kind of, 'FITTING IN'?

The vast majority of my collection has been bought through eBay. From early 1800's coinage to moderns. Every one of them is
a great looking, no problem coin (in my opinion image).

When I'm seeking higher grade examples of coins, it just seems I can't always find them at the local show. They do pop up now & then
but never when I'm in a position to buy or sometimes when I'm hunting down something else. On eBay I can find what I'm looking for
much more often then I can at a show. It's just convenient & there's a large inventory with good turnover.

On the other hand, I do like shopping at the shows and seeing the coin before buying it. It's easier than going back & forth with e-mailed
    questions before placing bids.

If it wasn't for eBay, my collection would be about 1/4 the size it is now.

mdwoods, good point and I'll probably get flamed and dog piled on but won't be the first time. Honestly... ever notice when they ridicule all the ebay auctions and sellers it usually doesn't happen to be one of our own? I see it all the time. I see board members knock sellers that hype PQ, or "Rainbow" or whatever. But NEVER one of their own.

Notice they NEVER say one of their own is enhancing pics? They might be nice coins indeed but you think any board member sellers enhance pics? Sell AT? cancel auctions early? Be jerks in their emails when asked questions? Have people bump up their auctions? Have 'Hidden" reserves? Have their friends or consignors bid on their auctions? Bid on their own auctions? OK I better stop this is getting to be too much fun.image Got to love the politics though.
