buy from the US mint? yes/no/always/never

I was wondering what people thought of buying coins from the US Mint. I have been reading these posts for a while now and I've seen some good, some bad.
I personally have bought a few mint and proof sets and never had a problem. I hope I didn't just jinx myself!

  • I never have and probably never will. But I have heard both good and bad about the Mint.
I just don't collect much of the new stuff and when I do I have other sources.

last time I did was in 1971 - IKE brown packs

easier for me to cherry pick from lots of sets that other people bought and took the loss on

I buy Proof sets from them and that's about it. It's a crap shoot as to whether or not you will make money, but in recent years with the state quarter program boosting interest, you usually make out OK, especially with the silver sets.

The last time I ordered anything big, was in 1999 when the Washington $5 gold coins were issued. I really wanted an "in the flesh" coin example of Mrs. Frazer's original design that should have been on the Washington quarrter.

In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

    Shoot yeah!

Now that they make people pay to return items, you don't get so much of other people's rejects.

I always get the mint sets, and the proof/silver proof sets. If I don't, I feel guilty for some reason, maybe just because I've always gotten them and I'm in too deep to stop now!

The mint has gotten much more efficient with their shipping than they used to be when I was a kid, in my opinion.

The average quality of proofs is vastly superior than in the past.

I always get crap in the mint sets. I find better stuff in change or at the bank.

Yeah, PROOF sets, Mint sets, Commems, occasional rolls.

Some work out nicely, others make me wonder what the heck I was thinking.

I always like receiving coins in the mail, so I will probably continue.

I bought a proof set in 1991 when I visited the Philadelphia mint. Otherwise I haven't bought anything from them.

  • I started buying from them in 1972. I stopped in 1978.
  • I buy uncut currency from them.

I buy silver proof sets and sometimes commems to give as gifts. Never had a problem with my orders; knock on wood. With my recent order of the '03 silv proof set, they charged my credit card when they shipped vs charging right when I ordered.

Naw, I don't buy from the mint. They don't sell 150 to 200 year old, lightly circulated coins.

  • Proof, mint and SAEs. Sometimes I'll pick up platinum and gold, but rarely. I also try to get most commemorative coins.

Why not buy from the mint? Are you going to get those coins cheaper at a later date? Perhaps, but none of the mint products are priced that high and I don't mind adding them to my mixed early/modern collection.

I do. I buy Proof and Mint Sets, Proof ASE, and once in a while Kennedy Halves.

I never have had a problem with the mint at all.
  • Yeah, proof/silver proof sets. Ocassionally a commemorative.
Definitely cheaper from the Mint but you have to order quickly,
they seem to sell out fast.

  • Yes, I buy proof sets, mint sets, proof silver American eagles, and occasionally a commemmorative directly from the U.S. Mint. I don't care if I make or lose money -- I do this for enjoyment.

Edited to Add: I recommend making several simultaneous purchases to reduce shipping costs. The shipping used to be free when you placed orders through the internet, but they quit doing this! We all should purchase new stuff and not just the old stuff -- otherwise, there will be no new "blood".
