Where have all your coins been before?

That is, before you got them.

Were they handled by the mint and then directly to you? Were they in a bank for 75 years? Did some little old lady leave them in an estate and you bought them?
When I was a child, I caught a fleeting glimpse

This one is from the Childs collection, a minor pedigree...
Childs picked all of his coins directly from the mint...

Big scratch on the holder I have to fix....

my coins have various stories, of which I know virtually nothing except who the owner before me was.

it is fun to think about, though.

I own nothing of any provenance. They've been at the coin shop.

I'd like to know where a couple of my G4 bust pieces have been in the past 200 years!

Most of my coins come from dealers. About the only pieces that I acquired directly from the mint are a few medals and modern Proof sets.

My older coins came from dealers. A few of them can be traced back to former owners and appearances as plate coins in some reference works. For most of them I have no idea where they have spent their existence.

This 1795 half dime does have an interesting history. I purchased it from a dealer who regularly travels to England to buy coins. Most of his acquisitions there are British pieces, but he does find an American coin now and then.

According to the story this piece was jingling among a group of similar vintage British coins that a little old lady brought to a coin shop in London. Of course in the British series, which dates back to Roman times, 1795 would almost be viewed as a “modern coin.” Perhaps if this piece had jingled among its mates a little less, it might have been graded mint state. As it is, it has been graded by PCGS as an AU-58.

Retired dealer and avid collector of U.S. type coins, 19th century presidential campaign medalets and selected medals. In recent years I have been working on a set of British coins - at least one coin from each king or queen who issued pieces that are collectible. I am also collecting at least one coin for each Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to ... ?

I'd easily pay serious money to know the answer. This question has fascinated me for the 30 years I've collected.

    So would I.

I'd give up a few coins too just to see the history of some of mine. But at least I have been keeping
a written history of my better stuff, where I bought the coin and from whom this dealer or
private collector acquired the coin. At least whoever acquires my stuff will have this reference point.

Just looking at some of my old circulated large cents makes me wonder where they have been.

Being interested in virtually everything related to the Civil War, I've acquired a couple of dozen Patriotic Tokens. While I have a few that are uncirculated, my favorites show some circulation. Its fun to imagine who had them and what their journey was in war time commerce.
