See who is still standing come next years playoffs
The dynasty is over. Profit sharing is here to stay which means the small market clubs no longer have to dump their up and coming stars to the Yanks at midseason. Oh, yeah, the Yanks can still outbid everyone for the aged superstar free agents like they did this year, but the time of sitting back and getting exactly what they need on the cheap at the trade deadline is over and done with. Look at all the holes they failed to plug....
As Lou said a few years ago, they don't intimidate anyone anymore.
Regarding the Jamericon's post... You won't see this year's Yankees team in the Bronx next year. There will need to be some changes made. I can see at least five starter players (including pitchers) that will not be in pin stripes next spring.
The Yankees really needed to win that extra inning game 5.
I personally would have preferred to see a Boston Red Sox vs. Chicago Cubs World Series.
The dynasty is over yes. It was over the day they never resigned Tino and to a lesser extent when they never made an offer to Mike Stanton this off season. Changes are in the wind. Rocket, Wells goodbye. Mussina is still here and Stienbrenner damn well give Pettite all the money he wants. Third base is a hole, as will be second when they move Soriano to the out field. The bullpen needs a makeover sans Mariano.
BTW, the Yankees never bought one title in their latest run. They won those titles by farm-raised talent and proven and smart offseason and deadline aquisitions. As an example the Marlins bought the 1997 series title.

and proven and smart offseason and deadline aquisitions
My point exactly. These days, teams have to overpay to sign proven free agents and to acquire the needed parts at the trade deadline. With millions coming into the coffers in profit share, the Kansas Cities of the world can hold onto their Mike Sweeneys and Carlos Beltrans unless someone steps up to the plate with an offer they can't refuse.
The Yanks only got Boone and Nelson at the deadline in an attempt to plug their many holes. Need I say more?
Well, I'm glad to see the Yankees lose anyway. I hate to see the Marlins win though.
Only one way for Steinbrenner to improve for next year - spend more money!! Maybe next year he'll just buy all the other teams, have them all forfeit their games to the Yankees and they'll win the Championship by default.
In spite of jamericon being such a poor loser, Joe Torre said it best at the end:
"I feel better knowing that the Yankees didn't lose, but the Marlins did win".
Give credit where due guy, the Yankees were beat by a TRUE farm built team. Two of the kids were playing AA ball this year before being called up. The "old" man on the pitching rotation is 29 years old. You want to talk "buying" a team, Steinbrenner does it every year. What was the payroll difference between the two teams? 164m to 55 m? And I'm not even knocking old George - it's his money and he can do what ever he wants with it. Parity really isn't such a bad thing. Dave
Real simple, the better team won. Better teams in the series history win on pitching, defense, two out hitting and moving base runners along. It's been this way since I started watching baseball in the early 50's. The Yanks got neither clutch pitching nor clutch hitting and quite frankly Soriano, Giambi and Posada looked lost at the plate. The Marlins had the best record from the middle of June on. Only diehard Yankee fans believed that they had the better team. Better teams don't lose in six and at home.
I love both teams. I always will. But everyone has to admit that this was good for baseball. Everyone always complains that the Yankees "buy" titles which I disagree with. You cannot "buy" a title. If that were true then the Yanks would have won. ANd the Yanks would not have lost in 2001 to the DBacks (although the DBacks spent BIG money as well that year, it was still less than the Yanks). I truly love the Yankees because they were my team before WE had a team in Florida. My point is that YOU CANNOT BUY TITLES IN BASEBALL!! This year and other years have easily proven that theory wrong. Even in '97 it was not money that won the title for the Marlins, it was a WS winning hit in the 10th inning!!
<< <i>Real simple, the better team won. Better teams in the series history win on pitching, defense, two out hitting and moving base runners along. I agree with you 100%. Last week I said in one of these threads that the better teams advanced to the WS and the Marlins are no fluke and people in here went berzerk, telling me that the Marlins were not the best NL team! They had the BEST RECORD IN BASEBALL from May to October and have NEVER lost a playoff series, but the Cubs are better....yeah okay.
I have been an Oakland A's fan since 1964 (they were actually the Kansas City A's then), and an avid fan at that.
I didn't watch an inning of baseball this year, and probably never will again. You can look for half the A's pitching staff and Miguel Tejada to all be in the Bronx next year. I sort of gave up when I heard the A's tell Tejada they weren't going to offer him a contract because they knew they couldn't outbid the Yankees - much like Jason Giambi the last time.
I love the game, but it's out of control.
as an aside, since Cammie is at camp - "this is really off-topic and belongs in the open forum - Carol wouldn't allow this to happen"
"I want to die peacefully in my sleep like my Grandfather did, as opposed to screaming in terror like his passengers."
Claiming that the Yankees farm raised their talent in this "run" is a joke....Far as I know WELLS CLEMENS MUSSINA GARCIA BOONE ...shall I go on are bought and paid for....the farm raised guys the fabulous SORIANO better known as the strike out king stunk...back to the bought and paid for guys....WEAVER CONTRERAS SIERRA oh well.....They are 2 and 6 in their last 8 world series games.... they wouldn't have been their if GRADY LITTLE didn't blow it and The SOX would've put on an offensive show against the fish....Poor showing by the American Leaguers....I always want the Americn League to win the World Series but that performance was pathetic!!!!
I've never pulled for the Marlins before, but I'm glad they won. They actually played as a team as opposed to a collection of stars. It's kind of nice to see someone actually enjoying the game versus doing their job.
<<Either way, the Marlins are an inferior team. They only won due to the Yankees' apathetic offense.>>
I don't know how you measure a teams superiority, but the Marlins beat them 4 out of 6 games in the World Series. I think that would make the Yankees the inferior team as compared to the Marlins. In 2003 the Marlins won twice as many World Series games as the Yankees and lost half as many. Can somebody explain how this makes the Marlins the inferior of the two ?
> My point is that YOU CANNOT BUY TITLES IN BASEBALL!! Going to make this a game of semantics, are you?
OK, you can't buy titles because there are no guarantees. What you can buy is probabilities. You're increasing the likelihood of a title.
You don't think the Yankees make it to the World Series so often because they are the best coached team (pick anything else besides money and don't take this as an attack on their coaching), do you? They make it there because their payroll is huge.
Forgive TDN his transgressions, for he is a long-suffering fan of those masters of the choke, The Mariners.
Go Yankees! OOPS! I mean go Marlins! Ah, who cares. On to football and my yearly opportunity to lift a few bucks from the wallet of another long-suffering Seattle sports fan - my UPS driver.
Either way, the Marlins are an inferior team. They only won due to the Yankees' apathetic offense
Wow. Didn't the Marlins' pitching have something to do with that apathetic offense? Isn't that the point of the whole game - to give up less runs than the other guy?
I like that logic. Using the same thought process, the A's were the inferior team to the Mariners this year. They only got to the playoffs instead of Seattle cuz of the M's inability to score runs at the right time.
Ohboy, let's extend that thinking to coins. That MS60 is the superior coin to that MS68. It only scored lower cuz of that gash on Miss Liberty's throat.
1. The Marlins absolutely had the best record since around 60% into the 2003 season. They have a team built around competence, of doing the little things that can lead to some big things too. Defensively as well as offensively. They have a mostly very youthful team that don't know enough to be intimidated by anyone else. And, so they just play and do their thing.
2. Jack McKeon deserves a lot of credit for leading the team to total victory. I have had very to complain about regarding his managerial actions. Unlike with Little's leaving Pedro in too long or Alou not stocking his team with enough youth to PR for Snow or ...
3. The Yankees are a bought team. Of that, there is no doubt. They do have a core of farm-raised talent, but that only means that they aren't 100% mercenary like the '97 Fish team. Besides, those who come to the Yankees are not really mercenary. They genuinely want to be a part of the most successful sports franchise in history. Clemens is a Red Sox product, yet loved being a Yankee. I'm sure that Giambi also loves being a Yankee. Ledee cried when he got traded. (What a wanker!)
4. There is nothing wrong with having loads of money, and pumping that into your sports franchise. That is, there is nothing for Steinbrenner to be ashamed of. He is a very successful businessman, and should not be criticized for that. I haven't looked at the numbers, but I strongly believe that the NYY franchise is highly profitable. To us fans, winning is everything. But, to a businessman, making money is everything. Look at the Clippers... Or, the Cubs and the Phils.
5. No matter how you slice it, the Yankees offense was just terrible. They remind me of the Mets, and even as a Mets fan I mean that in the perjorative. Those who say that the Yankees had the better team is just fooling themselves. It may be accurate to say that the Yankees have a team with more higher-profile players. Let's look at the position players:
1B: Giambi is a very big-name player, but is in the decline of his career. Nick Johnson has the highest OBP on the team. Derreck Lee is, well, who knows much about him? I do. He hits with power, average and has a high OBP. And, he plays stellar defense. And, Lee's offensive stats have been steadily INCREASING the past few years.
2B: Soriano has amazing talent, but doesn't walk much and has no discipline. Castillo, IMO, is overrated. He has no power and little plate discipline, but doesn't strike out much. He's merely a slap hitter with speed. But, Castillo plays very good defense.
SS: I think Jeter is overrated defensively, but he is always a very competent player offensively and defensively. Clearly, the Fish have an offensive hole at SS but possess the slight edge defensively.
3B: Boone will do fine; he's an offensive threat as well as a defensive black hole. Lowell is probably better offensively but not as good defensively. I'd give the nod here to the Fish.
C: Posada is very good offensively, but not as good as Pudge, IMO. And, Posada is 2nd-rate compared to Pudge defensively.
LF: Matsui is very good, and better than Conine. But, Conine has been having kind of a resurgent year. Good for the Fish, but I'd still give the nod to the Yankees.
CF: Bernie is in serious decline, and is below average as a defensive CF-er. But, he can still hit (just not run). Pierre is a totally different beast, being all speed and defense and really very little in the way of offense. His main offensive job is to get on and then steal 2nd. That's good, 'cuz he doesn't strike out much and is a good bunter.
RF: Garcia had been playing pretty well, like Conine. But, fundamentally, he's just taking up a valuable roster spot. Same with Sierra. Give the nod to the Fish, who can play either Cabrera or Encarnacion.
Pitching: I'd give the nod to the Yankees simply because Rivera is better than Looper/Urbina. Otherwise, both sides have a lousy pen and excellent starters who can fill in as relief.
Adding everything up, it is not at all clear to me that the Yankees have a better on-paper team than the Fish. Of course, the X factor is that the Yankees hitters have been choking so badly that they've allowed the Marlins' starters to go very deep into the game and not leave their team vulnerable at the hands of their pen.
It was a VERY bad mistake for Bernie to swing at the first pitch from Penny in Gm 5 (7th inning?) with the bases loaded and 2 outs. Penny was clearly in trouble...
I think the whole series turned around i the 4th game. I just hope that the Yankees turn weaver around to another team. Lucky for him there was no parade because someone would have definetly sniped at him. Best record ( tied with Atlanta, ( whole other story) ) ,A L Champs, A good year. At least they show up to the last dance ( 39th ), and thy will be baaack.
