POLL: Has anybody ever bought slab that had a counterfeit coin in it?

We'll assume PCGS and NGC as the authority for genuine coins.

Have you bought another grading companies slab that later PCGS or NGC body bagged as Not Genuine?

  • No I haven't but I do know that ACG, PCI, and PCGS have all slabbed counterfeits in the past. I would imagine all of the other services have errored on occasion as well. And of course some of the services do slab contemporary counterfeits if they are widely collected as part of a series ie: Machins Mills pieces, the contemporary counterfeit Conder tokens etc.

I personally didn't buy it so I voted for a friend who did...it was a 1909S added S indian in an ACG slab. All he paid attention to was that the grade was reasonably accurate and the coin was cheap for the grade. His suprise that ACG actually slabbed a decent coin had him so shaken that he didn't pay attention to the mintmark.

  • These results look good for slabs.
  • Add NCS. I have seen a counterfeit coin in their "genuine holder"image

I bought a ACG 1922-Plain XF45 Strong reverst Lincoln one time. When I got it it was in the holder, but it was a G-4 1922- Shadow D. It was the single worst financial loss I've ever had with a coin. This was about five years ago, and that remains the only ACG coin I've ever owned. ...I suspect I will never own another. The owner of that company could burn in _____ for what he's done to the hobby, and it wouldnt bother me.

No, I stay away from counterfeits. image Not to mention I generally can't afford the coins that would be counterfeit targets.

Well nwcs, you have something real important to learn.

Lesson on counterfeits: The vast majority of counterfeits are low grade common coins.

I can show them to you on Ebay from time to time being sold as good coins. I can always find them at major coin shows, and most times being sold as good coins there.
