Someone needs to explain why my heart isn't pounding.........

keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭
..........at the sight of this Sesqui. I understand that it's a weakly struck issue and anything above MS64 is scarce, but Puh-leeeeeease!! Why can't the coins sell themselves?? Why always hype?

Am I the only one who is unimpressed by this coin. Don't make me say the D-word and please, bite your tongue about original always being best. This coin needs help!!! JMHO.

I'm taking my pulse while looking at it. Nope, nothing. Wait, maybe it's because I'm dead.

I wouldn't go that far, John. Maybe someone sneezed on it a long time ago. I don't know, it's alright.

Original is always best. Hey Keets, if you feel the coin needs help so bad, why not buy it send it to NCS and save the Numismatic community of this eye-sore?image JMHO as well.

    ROTFLMAO!!! image

that would seem to be your rhetorical comment lately, anytime someone even alludes to the dreaded D-word or the sacred O-word. my comment about originality was misunderstood by you-----totally. the coin has the appearance of many that i've seen which were dipped long ago and not properly rinsed with the telltale signs of that now very, very clear. more directly, i guess i would be saying that i don't think the coin is original as is.

and that's JMHO, once again!! now, back atcha.image

    Wait a minute, isn't that a FULL BELL LINE?image

Seriously, it looks like someone forgot to wash the acetone off. For a 65 it certainly doesn't make MY heart pound.

A very unimpressive coin. The Sesquicentennial half is an issue I have decided to spend very little on since they don't look like much even in high grade. A nice MS63 will do nicely. It is one of the lowest priority coins in my collection of early commems.

ROTFLMAO as well. Perhaps I misunderstood what your point was. I really don't know what the D or the O word mean. I also don't care to get in your usual discussion original versus original from the mint.

As far as my "rhetorical comments lately"... I never find a NEED to come on here and knock what kind of coin others prefer. Now if someone posts a coin that imo is clearly cleaned and re-toned, and everybody is giving the ohhhs and ahhhs, I will give my opinion. I give this opinion in case someone doesn't know this and only to help.

I'm done commenting on this thread and was not looking for confrontation. Unlike some folks we know.

    hey Fifth

i can only agree with your comment. i have yet to see nicely toned example or a white coin with strong luster. this one has exceptional luster but the unimpressive tone is a bit distracting.

    al h.image
  • I wonder if the toning is not better in person? It looks different in the 2 shots.

small hidden tick on Washington's nose ....hmmm, I see a small line below the eye and behind the nose which is kinda just there.

This coin is so distinctive I am sure the graders remembered see it and just regraded it a "safe" 65.

Sure, that coin needs "help", if you love dipped-out eyesores. Why not give it an ol' run through the rouge buffing wheel while we're at it, eh?

I'm going to go against the grain here. This is a nice example of a difficult coin to find with eye appeal. Most sesqui commems are outright ugly. (Blue sheet for PCGS is 60% and NGC is 35% of graysheet, an indicator of how ugly these get) This one has lots of luster, a fairly decent strike which is uncommon, and what I believe is original skin. This is a coin I would welcome in my gem commem collection. Remember, you are looking at an image. My instincts tell me the coin is nicer than the image. The price, well thats another issue. I would think graysheet ask $4500 is about right. But thats just my humble opinion....I could be wrong.

    Edited: for clarification
  • Fats, are you saying most of these have a better strike ? Yikes !!!
  • Its cool, but not thousands of dollars cool.

Just the opposite. Most sesquis have very soft strikes. This one has a decent strike (not soft) which is hard to find.

In Laura's defense, a coin can also look better than what a pic looks like....
  • tradedollarnuttradedollarnut Posts: 20,233 ✭✭✭✭✭
John: thanks for the help, but Laura doesn't need any defense on this coin. As Fatman stated, these come looking like total crap and this is a bonafide stunning gem in comparison.

    hey LT.

you mean your icon looks better in person?? WOWZER!!image

  • I too let the coin do it's talking, and to be sure, of the Sesqui's that I've seen, this is probably one of the nicer ones. Most are so softly struck and so full of dings that it makes you wonder. Having said that, as far as the text on any given ad, I generally glance through it to see if I can glean any useful information. If I can great, if I can't, I take it with a grain of salt and move on. One thing that I've learned on here is that you certainly want to let the coin speak to you and not listen to the sales pitch that others make.

Nice Sesqui. I would enjoy seeing pics of similiar or better coins. A very tough issue. K
