We have a bunch of those around here. We have a dealership here that is run by 2 retired guys. They charge more for their coins than the other dealers, but the thing that really pisses me off is that I went in there looking for 1964 proof sets, they dump about 50 of them for me to look through, I pull 10 with AH Kennedys. I'm now having visions of posting 10 of these babys just to piss Russ off. I get

hey Marty

here's my bummer for the day.

i get a call last night from the "used to be local" guy that moved 30 miles away at the end of September, says he has my Matte Proof that i bought from Harry and some nice raw toned commems for me to look at. we meet last for dinner and i told him i'd come in today to the new shop. well, i get there and when i ask about the commems he replies "Those are gone, i sold them to Harry last night." not a problem, he has to do what he can, but i sure wish he would have said something and saved me a trip.

I didn't say a word about the AH Kennedys, I just put them in my pile and asked for a price. He carried them back to his desk and then returned with the news! I won't ever buy there again. Another time there I bought some SMS sets, found a 66 that was DCAM for sure, took it and 3 others with light FGs. He took them to his desk to check prices and sold me the 4 sets. When I got home the DCAM one wasn't there, he switched the SMS set with another. When I asked he stated he would never do that!

Perhaps he just let you THINK you were cherrypicking his stock and that he knew nothing about them. Then just for fun as you were thinking you were gonna rip him.... he keeps them.

one of my dealer pet peeves is when they have prices marked on stuff in a showcase and then they change it when i pick something out. not very ethical from my lofty perch. i'll generally just say no thanks and walk away with none of my dollars going to them anymore. it's almost like a bait-and-switch.

Marty - Don't give up. Try again in another six months. This time ask to go through the sets and pick out the worse sets and make a mental note of the better ones. Pick out six or eight that are truly average, then get all excited like you just found a hidden treasure and with a barely contained smirk ask the dealer his best price. When He goes to keep the crappy ones (he thinks you cherry picked the best), grab the best ones that you already determined were the best and say rejectedly, "alright then guess I will go with these ones"!

If the deal goes through tell him what you did, give him the bird and never go back. LOL

Arco is right. if he has done that more than once to me I would tell him right up front that he is messing with the wrong person. Cherrypick them himself or don't even pretend fto be a dealer.

I would give him one more chance and if not, the word goes out to every local coin club. The local collectors need to know how bad of a dealer he is.

Well me and him would of traded some sharp words on the spot. Cherrypicking is part of collecting in my opinion.

There is a guy that played with fire a few too many times and one day he got burned.

The dealer kept raw coins out for people to see and buy. But he kept his slabs locked up at all times. Well when I would ask about his slabs he had for sale, he would lie to me and say that he was out of that particular year. Especially if it was a rare date. He was watching and waiting for certain buyers that was his buddies before pulling them out.

Then one year at the local coin show. He and a man got into an arguement over some coins.... The dealer made the remark, "Well, I don't think you work hard enough to own that sort of coin anyway."

I heard it, the dealers around him heard it, and the other buyers heard it. That man went and complained.... then the other dealers that heard it backed him up.

The next year they told him to find some other show to sell his stuff at. His little shop became a ghost town pretty quick after that. It was a happy moment in my life.

If he screwed you once, and then lied to you, you still went back? Maybe you went back with the idea to rip him, but it sounds like he ripped you by using your time and knowledge to do his job for him?

I hope he gets the shaft (since that is what is coming to him). I would probably not be invited back to his shop after the first time of him doing something like that to me...I would say something if it was that obvious.

This species of mongrel dealer is very familiar to me since I live in Florida and there are more than a few of them around. The ones that have accepted that I am a cherrypicker love me because I help them cherrypick their estate purchases and help them screen for grading because alot of them have poor eye sight. When someone is nice to me , I am 100x times nicer to them, If what you describe happened to me, I would not exchange words or do anything vehement right there. It would be a simple matter of them being run out of business in the next six months. Numismatic communities are very tight no matter what city you are in. Reputation is everything and a bad reputation spreads like wildfire. Revenge is a dish best served cold, particularly if you know show promoters, graders, and powerful dealers. Those who breach numismatic etiquette, get breached themselves.

An AH JFK is a specific variety of the 1964s... Russ has a page with lots of images, but I can't remember it... here's a great image from mnmcoin... the accented hair, the wishbone, really came out well!

Yeah, that sucks. Maybe you should have just taken a couple at a time, and mixed in some mediocre stuff to mask what you were really after. Or when he dumped 'em, ask how much he wanted for each one before you picked the ones you wanted.

I haven't had that experience but I have heard of dealers who just don't
know how to grade. When an experienced collector comes in, the "dealer"
lets him or her do some free grading for him.
It's a crappy way to do business and I would put the word out about him...

You asked him if he had coins for sale. He pulled out a bunch for sale. You picked out the ones you wanted. He then refused to sell them to you.

How low can one get????

By the way, I disagree that you were in any way trying to "rip" him. You asked for certain coins and he pulled out some and you picked some of what he offered. How can that possibly be called "ripping"?? He's a dealer, you're a buyer. He offers to sell, you offer to buy. No ripping involved.

I can't believe that there that many nasty dealer's. In my area Fort Wayne Indiana all the dealer's I buy and sell to none of the IMHO would never stoop to the leval of letting you cherry pick coins then not sell them to you. The Dealer's in my area Fairfields rare coins, AtoZ coin, A & B coins all are top notch dealers in my book. We have a nother dealer MR whimps but i havent been to him in 9 or 10 years so I cant say much about him.

Where do dealers get off doing this. Are they so blind that they dont see that by doing this they are cutting off potental buyers. I know if im ever in Madmartys area I will be asking him about the name of that shop And I wont be droping any money on thier counters.

I hope you dont plan on going back there Marty.

This is what you do. Call the dealer up, say that your name is Mark (or any other name that isn't you) and tell him you found a small ceramic crock full of $20 gold pieces with Civil War dates buried in your backyard. Say that you want to sell all of them to him and that you'll be down to see him next week. Be sure to leave your phone number.

After about 8 days, he'll call you (looking for Mark) wanting to know where those gold pieces are. Inform him that you got tired of waiting for him to call you back (even though in reality you hadn't asked him to do so) and that you decided to just sell them for scrap gold since their gold content was greater than $20 per coin. Politely ditch him afterwards.

Bwuhahahahahahahahahahahah!
