What Motivates You to Collect (or Invest in) Coins ??

StuartStuart Posts: 9,826 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am interested to know what motivates each of us to either collect or invest in coins... Thanks in advance for your reply to this thread and for your participation in this non-scientific but interesting poll.

Do you collect coins...

1) Primarily as a pleasant hobby and past-time for the non-commercial enjoyment of it?

2) As an investment because you think that they will appreciate in value?

3) Because you think that they are beautiful miniature works of the metallic art that give you pleasure and which you enjoy looking at ?

4) For the satisfaction and challenge of finding a scarce coin (i.e. the Hunt),

5) As historical relics and artifacts

6) All of the above.

    Stuart,

I'm a big fan or the engraver's work, but I the poll leaves out a large part of the population by not including a reference to their worth as historical artifacts.

  • I chose #3. It is nice to buy them "right" and make a profit on the coin, when I have finished the enjoyment or upgrade.

    Because they're cool.
  • I am fortunate enough that my company does well enough that I can divest into coins. So to all of you suckers... I am not in the business of coins but I get to expense it to my company anyways!!

I can think of a dozen reasons not to have high capacity magazines, but it's the reasons I haven't thought about that I need them.

DHeath: Thanks for your suggestion. The poll has been updated to include a selection option for collecting coins as historic artifacts. Good suggestion!!

I was the oldest of 9 grandchildren and there was seven years between me and the next. My grandmother started me when I was six and it just stuck. I think she would be amazed to see my collection today if she were alive. I actually showed it to my mother for the first time in 20 years about four monthes ago and she was at a loss for words.

Baley: I tried to revise the poll to eliminate the duplicate category and unfortunately screwed it up. So if you'd like for me to restart it -- please keep the thread alive and I'll try it another day.

Thanks to those who have already participated.

I've already spent way too much time on this today. Thanks!!
