Any other Wisconsinites dislike our quarter choices?

fcloudfcloud Posts: 12,133 ✭✭✭✭
We can now vote on the state quarter. Whop tee doo! The quarter currently in the lead is the on with the cow, cheese, and ear of corn. We have to be the most anti-progress state in the union. We are actually voting for an image we should try to shake. Of course, I could look at it this way, one of the state quarters has to be the ugliest!

I think either Ohio (my native state) or California ( my current home) will battle for that "honor".

I heard the WI state quarter was going to be a drunk Brett Farve Riding a snowmobile and being decapitated buy a fence! Personally I like that one!

Just face it, you Cheeseheads are stuck with the image. image

We got stuck with the peach, after all, even though I don't think peaches even grow in this part of the state.

Don't shoot, but I kinda like the "agriculture" reverse the best of y'all's choices. image

(At least, of the ones I saw.)

    lordmarcovan,

I'll live with whatever we get. I guess if I choose to live with a bunch of cheeseheads, I have to understand people think I'm one, too.

I wish they would have never come up with that cheese hat thing.

    Here's moo to ya'.

    Tony

Oh, in case anyone wants to know. I prefer the explorer reverse.

Of those three choices I think the agricultural reverse is the best. Early exploration looks a lot like the Missouri reverse (speaking of that, where are they?) Scenic just doesn't do your beautiful state justice. Too bad. As for the ugliest, wait until Nebraska's turn. how about a corn cob and a covered wagon? I guess it could be worse, how about a portrait of warren buffet? Ugh.

The explorer reverse is nice, but speaking as an outsider who's never been to Wisconsin, the first thought that comes to mind is dairy stuff. I guess this is much like the way most folks immediately associate peaches with Georgia.

I don't think the race car looks good on the Indiana quarter, but I have to admit it's a good choice, since it's probably the first thing most people associate with the state.

Maybe the states who don't have any claims to fame that boil down to one image are lucky, eh?

PS- I was thinking the same thing as MEinNE, about the "Early Exploration" reverse looking too much like the Missouri reverse.

Good one! Has anyone ever come across one of the quarters the Missouri artist put a sticker of his original design over the reverse?

  • HI, this is my first post.

I'm a wisconsinite and I like the first design depicting Lafayette. Wisconsin has alot of history related to the early French explorers who traveled through our state by way of Green Bay, why not use that design. There are alot of cities, lakes and other areas named by these explorers; everybody already knows this is an agricultural state.

  • I was looking for the fat guy sitting on a couch eating brats, drinking bear, and rooting for the packers to lose another game, but did not find it image

Doesn't Wisconsin have the biggest cranberry production in the world? maybe they should have put on OceanSprays logo.

Doesn't Wisconsin have the most deer/vehicle accidents in the country? maybe they should have put on a car with a dead deer in its windshield.

Was Madonna born in Wisconsin? oops

besides high state taxes, what is Wisconsin well known for? ( I like the wildlife scene )
  • I voted for the cow. Really, it should have been squeaky cheese and a brewery. Better yet, the House on the Rock, now that is unique.

The cow and the corn should go on Iowa's quarter, best grain fed beef in the world. I say that as a Texan who knows high-end beef.

  • Being from Wiscconsin [Fox Valley] all 3 suck. The 1st one isn't much relevant. The other two are boring. At least they didn't go with a football image. We don't have a local newscast on Sunday night. We have a Packer newscast. And I am a Packer fan. But I don't bleed green and gold. Enough of this. Go back to the drawing board and start over. New Hampshire has the worst so far, IMHO. Even the cliff fell it was so embarrassed.
  • is there a significance to "FORWARD" in Wisconsin? a state motto or something? was rather curious that all 3 designs print Wisconsin 1848 forward
  • I actually think a pic of the midwest flyway for migratory waterfowl. Horicon Marsh is a great place....
  • Nobody much knows Horicon Marsh is there unless you're a hunter. Most likely Trooper is. Wisconsin has nothing to be famous for except Wisconsin Dells and the Packers. Johnsonville brats are great, but would look lousy on a coin.
  • On 3rd thought, deer hunting is huge in this state. Maybe incorporate that somehow. IMHO

    Ken,

Like every state we have a lot of history here. We have a lot of shore line. We are boardered by two of the Great Lakes--Michigan and Superior. We have praries in the south west part of the state. Kettles created from the glaciers. Thousands of inland lakes. Wildlife--more than just deer on the front of cars with cronic wasting desease. Whooping Crains, Sand Hill Crains, Blue Heron. We are the Badger State, our state bird is the Robin. As for fish, we have many species including Muskellunge, Norther Pike, Walleye, Salmon (transplants for our great lakes), Trout, and many more. We have many National Forests. We have a statue of Abe and Mary Todd Lincoln in Racine at a local college.

There are many educated people here and this is the best we could muster. What a shame. We have The Calletraba (spelling) an absolutely beautiful building on the shore of Lake Michigan (downtown Milwaukee). Many lighthouses on the shore of the great Lakes. I could continue but it would get too long to read.

    Jonesy,

I think all three were rejected by the arts board, but it looks like we are moving "Forward" anyway.

Maybe our logo should be "Backward."

We have chased so much business out of this state--it is amazing!

I wish they could start over.

  • I was born in Wisconsin and lived the first 25 years of my life there. I think the agricultural look on the coin is a great idea. That's what Wisconsin is! Why try to change that?!!! Sure there is a lot more to Wisconsin than farming, but if you stick an explorer on the coin, would it have the same impact? Deer?....every state has a deer population. The whole idea of the quarter design is to best represent the state and agriculture is a huge part of the state. Anything else just wouldn't feel like Wisconsin.

An aquaintance of mine who works for the Wisconsin crime lab told me that the state has the highest incidence of cannabalism in the US. Maybe we could feature Ed Gein. image

About the Missouri quarter. Check out the one that I bid on last night link. It might have been too much to pay, but I thought that the Disco thing was funny...and besides, I get two die crack quarters ala "The Pi$$ing Minuteman"

    Just Kidding.

Wisconsin is very Pretty... at least the part I saw in the early 70's. I had a buddy I went through AIT with at Fort Polk Looseyanna and when we both returned from Puke Nam we both got stationed at Ft Polk. He lived in Lodi so we blasted up there a couple of times. Fun trips and Fun times. Long ago though. Maybe it has changed.... By far the prettiest state I saw when the Army travels were had. image

I guess we will get what we deserve!

Even though we are called the dairy state, California beats our production year in and year out.

The cow head looks like a trophy head hanging on a wall!

Iowa may have great grain fed beef, but the stuff we get around here is corn fed--it is the best. Maybe we should have put a nice Porterhouse on the quarter!

    Good Night!

  • Maybe a deerhunter wearing a cheesehead, standing in a snowy corn field next to a cow and drinking a Miller Lite! That would be perfect! It would cover the people, the culture, the recreation, the land, the industry, the climate, the sports, the wildlife...........

How 'bout a rusted out Truck with a deer hanging out the back and Tombstone Pepperoni pizzas for wheels! No wait,

An Amish buggy with horse piles strewn over the lane........but my all time fav would be a huge central image of the backside of a dairy cow looking back at the viewer, and the caption:

    WISCONSIN! SMELL OUR DAIRY AIR!
  • <sarcasm alert>

you people put foam cheese on your heads for God sakes!!! Why in the world would you be complaining about what the state quarter looks like as long as you can grind them up and sprinkle them on brats???

I may not have mentioned by two favorite football teams are the Tampa Bay Bucs and whoever is playing the Packers. This week, my second favorite team is the Bears. image

I like the design that had the critter on it. What was that a badger or something? That sure harkens back every memory I have of Wisconsin, yeah, world class badgers.

The people that make up some of these designs ought to be put up for public humiliation. Oh well, who am I to cast stones, I'm from california and we may end up with a quarter that looks like a tree sawed in half or the ocean on a windy day. WTF.

I was looking at the five proposed Michigan designs. Each description begins with "outline of the state of michigan..."

Can't we drop the state outline motif? Slapping a map on the back of the quarter is not very inspiring.

Here is a comment I took from the page showing the proposed Texas designs:

Numbers 2 and 3 are too busy. Number 1 does not reflect the entire state and is also too busy. Number 4 would be my second choice but it is nowhere near the quality of Number 5. I feel that number 5 reflects what Texas is all about...the shape of the state and the Lone Star.

What!?!?!? The shape of the state is what Texas is all about? I live in Seattle and I feel that the outline of the city limits is really what Seattle is all about. This is absurd! Isn't there some other way to represent a state and its people aside from a wiggly line with no artistic merit?
