Raw Coin Collectors do not know Squat.

FairlanemanFairlaneman Posts: 10,426 ✭✭✭✭✭
They cannot tell the difference between excellent luster and impaired luster. They grade coins with standards that are out dated. They think a so so coin is a Gem. You say hairlines to them and they think you are talking about something on the top of thier head. A slide mark is something left when stealing second base in a baseball game. Strong Strike is something a Teamster does. Guess they are just all messed up when collecting thier coins.

By the way did the above statements make you want to Puketh ?

If so then why do some collectors have the gall to put down collectors that collect coins in plastic and Register thier coins in the Registries ?

Just Curious.

funny Ken - but I agree these folks have no right to live in this world - they shall be banned from civilization - their inards shalt be eaten by vermins and they shall be entombed in wormwood. Then and only then shall all the registry folks puketh over them in unisonimage

Did you ever look at the poorly graded raw coins on e-bay. At least if you buy them in plastic they are close to the grade!

Let's see, should I buy a 1921-D Mercury Dime raw for $1300 and hope the grader has a clue, or get one alreaded graded and authenticated for the same money. Let's see which would make a better investment over time. The first one could get bb for a bunch of reasons, the latter well, I would think it must be close with a buy back guarentee.

I think I'll swith back to the old days! I'll take the horse and buggy down to the local tading post and see what I can find...

Progress people, it is called progress. It is a simple fact of life. Thank God those days are gone!

Ken is absolutely correct. Those Rawbies need to move out of their caves and into the 21st century. image

I like both raw and slabbed. I am more comfortable buying slabbed on the net, unless it's from someone I've bought fom before. And about the opening remarks in this thread, well they're mostly true. As for sliders, isn't that what they call White Castle burgers?

Wait a minute! This could turn ugly.image

We need to remember that a raw coin can be a coin that just hasn't
been graded yet and a slabbed coin can be just a crackout away from

I think I know squat. I collect both. I do know enough to see that my grading technique is at least as consistant as the technique used by the graders putting coins in plastic which is very inconsistant in some cases. I do realize they grade many hundreds of coins every day which probably widens the margin for error. JMO.

I'm a coin lover. It doesn't matter to me whether it's in a slab or not. Most of the quality coins that I find happen to be in slabs, because the owner knew that they were premium coins, and wanted to get them certified to increase their marketability and selling price.

I happen to like buying coins that are slabbed, because they have already been through an objective (hopefully) third party grader.

Because of my personal collecting habits, I wouldn't elect to buy an MS-66+ coin in today's market whether it's raw or slabbed. I would probably only pay an MS-64 to MS-65 price for a coin that is slabbed by either NGC or PCGS.

I dont think that most people disagree with whether or not thrid party grading is an advance to the hobby -- although some do. I think that it's more of a personal decision as to what type of coins to purchase. Whether you prefer condition rarity, date rarity, type rarity or series rarity.

Grade a coin....man what the heck do you expect from a Palstic Collector. I better get that ANA Grading book out and see if the last slab is correct. Tough seeing the Luster with the pictures they show. Hmmm.....I'm screwed.

Why is there so much animosity between those who prefer to collect raw coins and those who prefer to collect slabbed coins?

Are we just entertaining ourselves with Sunday night banter, or are some of you guys really being serious?

I hope that you're taking this that seriously. It's supposed to be a challenging & fun hobby...

We are finite beings, limited in all our powers, and, hence, our conclusions are not only relative, but they should ever be held subject to correction. Positive assurance is unattainable. The dogmatist is the only one who claims to possess absolute certainty.

  • Reason being is because they like to rip the unknown unsuspecting buyer off...It was done to me until I went to a creditable dealer and had them look at what I bought...I am still not good at it, there are to many unknowns today. Things have made it easy for the criminal to duplicate...I say graded coins are the way as they provide a grade that is within what the price range for a coin should be. Keeps the Hobbie honest.
