What is your best all-time Ebay buy?

I just received a coin back from PCGS, a 1917-D Buffalo Nickel, 10% off-center, with beautiful color(pinks and greens) that crossed from NGS 65 to PCGS 65, invoice #3118702. Bought this around two years ago raw on ebay from a seller with the handle "yankeetraderbob" for around $1200.00( had it for $650.00 but got sniped at the end ). This has to be one of my best buys on Ebay. Does anyone have a good idea of what this coin is worth? Bluesheet for a 1917-D in PCGS 65 is around $2800.00, but with the beautiful color and the error, how much of a premium is it worth?
Lets hear about some of your best Ebay buys!
I am still a computer moron, so I can't attach a picture of the 17-D unless Shylock walks me through it. TomT.

  • Can I ask you why you had it slabbed by NGS to start with?

Millenium, I had it slabbed around two years ago by NGC more for convenience than any other reason. My local dealer is a big NGC submitter.

  • I got an NGC F-12 1893-S Morgan for $1500...sure it's above sheet...but has some lovely blue toning in the devices and part of the fields that wasn't evident in the picture when I bought it. I feel like I got away with grand larceny....

About 18 months ago I bought a PCGS-63 1890-CC Tailbar Morgan from a dealer using "Buy It Now" for around $550.

Those of you who know major Morgan varieties are probably stunned... I know I was when it happened.

I got this one off of ebay...

Got it into a CAM holder, which makes it the only cameo coin, pop 1. If that kind of thing excites you.

If not, then there are only forty of them minted anyway, and that excites me.

My best buy was a 1946 D/D Jefferson ANACS MS 65 5 steps. It crossed to PCGS as MS 66FS! Only coin I ever had cross to a higher grade.

I bought this 1889 raw Indian cent last week and it turned out to be a rare S1 DDR. Like your 17-D Buffalo it would have been a lot cheaper except for one other cherrypicking bidder.

My best eBay buy was a group of four proof sets, 1962, 1963 and two 1964's.

I bought a raw 26-S cent graded 63RB by the owner. I thought it was bn, but looked 64. When I got it, sure enough, 64BN. I sent it to PCGS, and it came back 64RB. ...in all honesty, it was a bn coin, though.

Thanks to those dealer overstocks I'm 1 coin away (minus the 95-P) from finishing my Morgan set...don't think I would've been able to do it otherwise.

They may not be the prettiest, but now I have the rest of my life to upgrade

  • Last year. $300 and change for a COMPLETE rainbow bu washington quarter set 32 to 64 less only the 32d & 36d put up in wayte raymond boards in a national coin brown album since the 60's. this fella was super wealthy, knew nothing about coins at all and was "just ebaying his deaparted dad's stuff off" who happened to be an original money partner with walt disney in the early 50's. His fuzzy photoing and minimal "washington quarter set" basic description did it,but i had already made several total rips from him so i knew it was more to it and could envision the rainbow and unc status of the set based on prior hits of other sets. we subsequently helped him out with the rest of the estate disposal at fair market buys in private transactions. BUT I had even placed a very fat 4 digit "gonna win it snipe" bid and still got it for the $300 and change. YES ! it comes in,the package is opened and gleaming light rays of sunburst and true rainbows were on every coin and predomonantly on the first 2 cards of 30's and 40's. Got many, many 7's, a bunch of 4,5 & 6 '*' star designations and that "wonder set" of washingtons for a total of input time of hands on just those coins and the selling of them had a total of maybe 6 to 8 hours in it. Turned into right around $24 to $25,000 after slabs, fees, etc. But we did the right thing in convincing him and halting his bleeding to death on ebay and took care of him very justly with the remaining larger portion of stuff, which was chocked full of all kinds of goodies. spend around 150g with him over the next several mos on all that was left. Then again on the 10 or so ebay lots we won they were all mr simple all sales final. We took my chances, rolled the bones on all auction wins and WON BIG TIME,at least for us anyway..these were very nice hits indeed, the kind you wish you could find every day !!!!! But really,
I tell ya though,I believe the thrill and koolaide smile on that set of quarters was better than when i got a tecumseh mini-bike in the mid sixties from santa claus. Talk about a RUSH ! the old ticker was thumping my shirt buttons off it was so awesome....now THAT was a true ebay rip if there ever was one. The prior ones were not sneezers either. YEEEE-HAAAA !

If I win something on ebay that I don't have to return due to undescribed problems I feel like I did good.

Nothing particular comes to mind, just a few that have increased in value more than I would have expected. However, I have picked up numerous coins that are very difficult to find for far less than I would have had to pay from a dealer.

Geesh ... where to start? An uncirculated set of 1938-64 Jeffs for $38 (and the '54 was a MS-64 S/D) ... a 1960 Jeff that slabbed PR-68 DCAM for $10 .. a wonderously toned 1938 Jeff proof for $73 that slabbed PR-67 ... a 1967 SMS Jeff for $9 that went MS-66 DCAM ... another 1967 SMS, this a JFK, that slabbed MS-66 DCAM for $16 ... a $7 ACG 1961 PR-69 DCAM that went PR-69 CAM at PCGS ... numerous PR-66 Jeffs from 1938 to 1942 in the $40 range ... a PR-65 1941 Mercury for $93 ... (a $42 1940 proof Jeff that is in for grading now that should be a lock PR-67...). If you know how to avoid the junk/fly-by-night sellers and have an eye for interpreting often lousy images, there are many eBay buys to be had ... image

I got a genuine Thick Planchet 1694 London Elephant Token in a lot of coins that cost me less than three bucks (less than five, shipped).

The Elephant was wounded but real. It was around VG with some deep digs in it. I still didn't complain. image

Another time I got a decent 1787 Connecticut copper in a $10 Darkside lot.

  • I picked up a batch of 50 Morgans for $350 from an estate auction. The usual story about not knowing coins, etc. Picture was lousy and just showed them in a pile but I saw what looked to be a few AU at least. No dates were listed.

Pulled several nice ones out of that batch along with a few slugs, but I also found an 89CC in EF and a 90CC in 63. They were the only CCs in the lot!

Doubt I'll top that one for awhile.
