    Yeah - I am not sure the Shield nickel showdown would elicit this interest, but, I would be willing to make this a Shield nickel/Roosie dime tag team match and give you guys 6 months to build your shield nickel sets to accompany your Roosies image

    Yea...... put some Mercs in there also.

    Nick bring the 43S you aced me out on a few months back. The coin from Heritage, MS67FB. Sure would like to see the coin in person.

    If you guys show up in Portland I'll bring the Mercs down. Some are OK and some need help but I have been working on them. image Outside chance I'll be down to only needing 2 coins for a complete set by then.

    Just maybe a local Buffalo collector will show off his set also. That would be cool also as his is in the Top 5 in the Buffalo Registry.

    Welcome to the Roosey registry Mitch. Things just got tuff for the rest of us.
  • onlyroosiesonlyroosies Posts: 3,320 ✭✭✭✭
    Bill, I have a few mercs I could bring. But for now lets just keep this a Roosie challenge.
  • It's a nasty fish we catch a lot of on Lake Erie. We also have Largemouth Bass which put up a great fight and like to break water. Not too many people around here eat Bass as we have an abundance of Yellow Perch (yum yum) and a decent amount of walleye (yellow pike). Most of our stream fishin' yields trout (rainbows, browns, etc.). We may be in the "rust belt" but we have some great fishing!!

    Sheepshead fish.....what is that ? None in the Northwest that I know of.

    The Fish is a 4 and 1/2 pound Small Mouth Bass caught yesterday on the Columbia River about 125 miles east of Portland. A life long friend and myself have fished the river for years. 50 + Small Mouth were caught yesterday. A couple of the others were in the 3 pound range. For sure a good day on the river bank. We just do our part to conserve the Salmon run on the Columbia which received so much attention in the National media a couple of years ago. These Small Mouth are voracious feeders on the Salmon Smolts trying to reach the ocean. The limit is 5 fish so a whole bunch of catch and release was done. This one is about as Big as they get around here. I'm still holding out for the 6 pounder though. image

    Also this is a Hobby that has Full Approval from the wife.....she really likes Pan Fried Smallmouth. Hopefully one day she will warm up a little about the Coin collecting also.

    Ken >>

  • Bill, if it is really "the coins, not the plastic" (and I totally agree with you on that point), then why the heck don't you jump on the PCGS bandwagon and crossover your NGC roosies?? Everyone says your set is no question one of the best, and having met you some years ago, I KNOW you are as dedicated to the series as anyone else.

    So what I dont understand is: If you are so confident that your NGC dimes can hold their own in a predominantly PCGS showdown, then why not cross them?? It will only increase their value!

    IMHO, Bushmaster's query is a reasonable one, especially because Nick/OnlyRoosies recently did exactly that?

    My only interest in this being that I would like to see these collections showcased as part of a Registry sponsored event, be that PCGS, NGC or a combination. However, I suspect it is not an easy task to get the grading companies to work together on something like this. I will hook up with OnlyRoosies on this issue this week (he can them hook up with Rainbowroosies) and see what we can come up with. image

  • Crossing over rainbowroosies' set would seem to make even more sense right now as there has definitely been a loosening of PCGS grading standards of late in regards to MS67 roosies. 2-3 years ago, PCGS would not give a 67 grade to a roosie if it had a cheek tic or a flame tic , no matter how eye-appealing the coin. That is most certainly no longer the case.

    If the expense of crossing is what is holding Bill back, I will be happy to donate one or two grading fees to the cause and I'll bet there are plenty of other board members out there who would follow suit. How about it guys?? (although I suspect that it is not so much the $$ that is holding Bill back, so much as it is principle ["...the coin, not the plastic..."]. And I do think that Bill's adherence to this principle is admirable. It's just that a set looks so much cooler if all coins are in matching holders!image

    Bushmaster, I have personally seen Bill's set and it is trully a work of art. As all of us have our specialty as to what we enjoy
    collecting, I believe Bill has no use for the registry nor does he care about full bands. He has a beautifully toned set and most of
    his coins were acquired many years ago. His set was built with a certain look and every coin in his set compliments the other. So
    IMHO in Bills eyes crossing any of his dimes would be a waist of money as he has NO intention of selling. I know that for a fact
    as I've tried to get him to pry loose of a few of his babies, And I've offered some pretty stupid money for a few of his dimes. He'll
    just look at me and smile...image Bill has the eye and its a huge compliment to me when he shows any interest in any of my dimes.

    Onlyroosies
  • I agree with most of what you are saying Nick...but...if he truly had no interest in the Registry, then why would he have his set registered with NGC??? especially when putting a set on the NGC registry is far more difficult, time consuming and complicated?

    I think Bill registered his set with NGC because NGC will accept both NGC and PCGS holdered coins. I also believe that Bill was the first or almostthe first person to Register a silver Rosy set on the NGC Registry - he's an "old timer" in that regards. Like you, I've seen Bill's set and its superb - not only in quality/grade but is sheer eye appeal. Its one thing to have a MS67+ grade set, its more difficult to have a white or toned MS67+ set, but its even more difficult to have a MS67+ set where the coins are toned the same - all rainbows.....its the goal many collectors such as myself work for (even if my color is blue not rainbow). I feel Bill's set stands on its own merits but I do appreciate the difficulty that Mitch has mentioned about sponsorship by both NGC and PCGS for this Rosy showdown. I also agree with you that if the coins were mine, I'd probably try to cross them to PCGS just as Nick has been doing and I have been doing obver the last 1-2 years. You're also right IMHO that PCGS is looser now than in the past on MS67's (but not MS68's).

    Bushmaster,
    Very good questions deserving a serious answer. I have several reasons not to cross the coins:

    1. Principle: I collect what I like not what grading services like, or coins they put high numbers on (read this as an arrogance that I grade roosies as well as anyone). My proof rainbow roosie set and my proof rainbow Washington set were built with the same emphasis -- color and flash not numeric concern.

    2. Eye-appeal: Color means the most to me by multiples. Grade is a considerable concern, but not THE concern.

    3. Fear: What if the best 1949P or 1947D roosie in the world was damaged cracking it out or reslabbing it?? I might get money, but some coins like my 1960D are irreplacable. You might say the risk of loss is slim to none, but that "miniscule" risk is TOO HIGH for me....Laughable as it sounds, I might cry if these coins were damaged....Therefore, every one of my best coins is still in its original holder. I've never played a numbers game trying to upgrade by resubmitting coins.....Do I really need to break 68* plastic to convince myself (or someone else) the coin is nice?????

    In summary, grade is not that important. Indeed, several of Nick's NGC 68s (his old set) came to him from me. I replaced those 68s with 67s I liked more??????? In fact, I am presently torn with replacing my 1954P 68* coin (Nick's old icon coin) with a 67FB coin that has the Wayte Ratmond look I best like?? .......I realize I am not a player in the PCGS Registry game and I have no desire to be one. My goal has always been to build the most eye-appealing gem set I could build....Hopefully, some type of viewing can be arranged. Once you see the coins in person, I'll be suprised if you think the sets'"eye-appeal" is not up to PCGS' standards or anyone else's standards.image

    Just to update everything, I am in discussions this week with OnlyRoosies/Nick (if I had Rainbowroosies/Bill's phone number, I'd be in discussions with him too) concerning the exhibition/showdown.

    Progress has been made:

    1. Miles happily agreed to be a judge for this event;

    2. Dave Schweitz happily agreed to be a judge for this event;

    3. I believe Rick Montgomery is also willing to be the final judge. We exchanged emails yesterday/today, which appear to me to be positive in nature, but I am awaiting a final confirmation from him;

    4. BJ confirmed Portland is not possible, as the only venues for showdowns in 2004 for PCGS will be FUN, Summer ANA and all Long Beach shows. 2/04 Long Beach or 6/04 Long Beach look like the 2 possibilities at this point.

    More details to follow image

    Bill, True indeed. But lets not forget that there are a few dimes in your set that came from me. image
    No doubt you are the man when it comes to beautifully toned Roosies and I can say I am proud to
    have a few of your rejects in my set and even more proud that a couple of my mine are in your set.

    Bill, If Mitch can put all this together for either the February or June Long Beach show It would be
    my pleasure to cover your entire cost of the trip. It would be worth it to get another view of your
    wonderful set. Of course I want first shot at any rejects you may be parting with.

    Nick
  • Bill----thank you! for a very elegant answer! this showdown is going to kick ass!!! I for one absolutely can not wait to see your set!!!and nicks & craigs sets as well! many years since I saw yer stuff.

    Do you still have the 1960-p MS67 I sold you (via TT) way back when, when it was a PCGS pop1?

    Nick,
    Either the 54P 68* coin or the PCGS 67FB will be going....First, I want to see how knowledgable "roosie guys" view each -- I'm having trouble making a choice?? ......Also, thank you for the coins you've sold me, life ain't a one-way street!!

    Bushmaster,
    Yes, after a decade plus, the 60P is still "the man" -- I've never seen a 60P with anything near the two-sided color....but, wasn't that your brother's coin?? Thought you sold me a NGC 57D in 68?? .....Assuming this event happens, I might even bring along a few rainbow frankies just to tease you with......

    Craig,
    Find me something great and I'll toss in that PCGS MS 66FB 43D BLUUUUUUUUEEEE Merc as a finder's fee!!!imageimage
