Are you feeling lucky!

Let's say that I've got a coin that we all agree is worth exactly 100K. You would love to buy it at 100K, even if you can't afford it.

I'd be willing to sell 1000 lottery tickets at $105 each. The winner of the lottery would get the coin, and I'd get 105K.

How many tickets would you buy at $105 each? Why?

You really need a lawyer in the family -- I'm pretty sure that lotteries are illegal to set up and run as private individuals.

But hey, when you're done coining new money, I'm sure the lottery will be a fine idea. imageimage

935 tickets. Very very likely to win, and stand to make 65K.

I just heard last night about a lady that is trying to get rid of 5 properties. She didn't want to go thru an agent so she has set up something like a lottery without the legal hassles. $100 entry and a 75 word essay about why you should get one specific property. So there would be 5 winning entries, one for each lot. I think it was UsDreamProperties.com or something like that. You could get rid of your $100k coin like that and I would buy one ticket if I thought I had a chance at a quality essay. I used to write what I thought was PQ material in school.

anyway, since it's a thought experiment, I'm still tempted to buy a majority of the tickets and try to get the coin at a discount. of course, that would really suck to not win it, be out the money, and no coin!

what i mean to say is I would NOT just buy one or a few tickets, as I have no luck in drawings and such.

to have a chance, I'd need to put the fix on

I would buy one. If you sell all the tickets you get your price for the coin, everyone who buys a ticket has something to get excited about, and someone gets a great deal. In my opinion there are no losers. I know a person who sold a car like this. Joe

Two. Buying one ticket gives you odds of winning of 1/1000. Two tickets halves the odds to 1/500. Three tickets makes them 1/333. Buying two tickets gives you the best (by cost) chance of winning.

Run it as a charity raffle and I'd buy one ticket. Cost and expense of the raffle would net the charity of choice zero dollars! Hey, that's the way everyone does that on telemarketing charity or union issues!image

I would have to buy two. Since this is hypothetical, can the coin be the 1794 Armon Carter Silver dollar?

Baley have you ever been to the racetrack and heard the term "bridgejumper"?

Maybe you could go around the world and buy all lottery ticket combinations when there is a very high carry-overimage

0 because I wouldn't win it no matter how many I bought. And if I spent money without receiving anything in return, it's just giving away money. That is why a lottery is a stupidity tax.

999/1 and 499/1 are not the worst odds in the world, i might be willing to take a shot or two. I also would rather pay more or get slightly worse odds if some of the proceeds could be earmarked for charity/worthy cause.

As Michael suggested, you may want to contact a lawyer and be pretty careful about any appearance of impropriety - not that we ever see anything like that in the coin industry/hobby.....
